Using Divx 4.12 decoder for Divx 4.12 content

I've followed the various sticky topics on this forum to:

1. Keep the Divx 4.12 codec "divx.dll" as divx4.dll and registering it so I can still encode with divx4.dll.
2. Disable GAIN.
3. Play divx 3.11 content with the divx 3.11 decoder.

Now I would LOVE to know if there is some way to have the Divx 4.12 decoder play Divx 4.12 content.

I'm assuming Divx 4.12 uses divxdec.ax the same as divx 5. If that's the case, and I keep a copy of the divx 4.12 divxdec.ax (as say divx4dec.ax), I should be able to rename the divx5 decoder to divx5dec.ax and rename the divx 4 decoder to divxdec.ax and then open my divx4 content....right?

Is there a cleaner way to do this so that divx 4 content is played by divx4dec.ax (renamed and registered - is this possible?) and Divx 5 content is played with divxdec.ax? Can the media player (BSPlayer, Divx Player, WMP) distinguish between the codecs used to encode an avi? It seems so given it knows the difference between divx 3.11 and divx 5.

Any thoughts/help from registry/divx guru's would be greatly appreciated.

why would you LOVE to do such a thing?! DivX5 plays DivX4 content perfectly.

Not in WMP on an underpowered PC.

I don't have any problems with WMP with my 1.3ghz athlon (winxp), but my 500mhz P3 laptop has problems (win2k).

It's just cleaner having the right decoder playing the right movie.
