DVD2AVI and two passes

I want to use DVD2AVI (1.82 OGO modified version) to make my Divx5 movies on two-pass system. For make this, I save the two sessions (.d2s files) related the two passes, like this:

start /w dvd2avi_182.exe /saveavi pass1.d2s
start dvd2avi_182.exe /saveavi pass2.d2s

I tried with Divxauto5 but this not work!

My version should be out soon, it does things in a peculiar way...but works well..it supports xvid/divx4/divx5 2pass very well & allows for the setting up of Temporal Smoother, Decomb, etc inside DVD2AVI...

Have you seen the "Vidomi" encoder? It seems to be some type of DVD2AVI encoder with features similar to yours. The author has not implemented BeSweet, but it is very feature packed program, although not as flexible as your project sounds. For instance, we will be able to choose Decomb or IVTC 4 with your program. Correct? While with Vidomi it doesn't give us a choice.

Just wondering if you have seen his work and if you two could produce something good. Its probably too late for that now though :)

The guy of divxauto5 (http://home.zhwin.ch/~schwemat/dvd2avi/index.html) is debugging his program to work with Divx5Pro (at this time only works with the basic codec).

Maybe that will be the fastest way to encode an avi? Completely in YUV2 colorspace and not involving other tools... sounds great ;)

Well its quicker than the normal AviSynth -> VDub way on mine (however, on MaTTeR's (he's testing for me) its slower, because his got dual CPUs...I think...very strange...but hopefully something ill fix soon)

Nic, i read your post in the Gnot forum about you are not very excited with the idea of releasing a new DVD2AVI, and releasing the source code too, because some other guy could take advantage of your work and release another version of his own.
How are you going to handle that?
I hope that didn't change your mind about releasing a new DVD2AVI. I sure would like to try it, when it comes out ;)

Ill definitely release it, just only when its ready, at present, if I released, people would try fixing its little problems, like making my cr*ppy dialogs look better & re-release it.

Once im finished...I want people to change things, because I am quite bad at drawing interfaces (I have no sense of presentation :) )

Rui do you want (& far more importantly do you have the time) to test this it for me?

Nic, first i want to apologize if i miss understood your post.

I would be very happy to test your DVD2AVI version. I never used DVD2AVI outside of Gnot, but i would be representative of that faction of people that would be using it for the first time :)

Subtitles needed yes. But mostl of all the use of filters like Decombd and also it really needs BeSweet (Much better audio transcoder than DVD2AVI's IMO). Go straight from VOB to high quality volume maximised MP3 in one step. Should support some of the basic BeSweet 'recommended' options.

I know it's a lot of work. But soon we will have an all in one transcoder that rocks!

Well, dvd2avi already does pretty much everythign i need to do :-)

@ pass batch mode woudl be nice, enstead of it just auto popign up the save avi again after first pass.

I'd still use nandub and besweet though, unless you start added multiplexing and spliting suport but that gets involved and takes yoru time away from the core fuction of the program.

Whatd be cool is if dvd2avi would become angle aware so we woudln't nessicarily have to do that in the riping stage

Otherwise though a most usefull, and often used program :-)

I'm sure you dont want every body and their brother to beta test....but if you want another processor, i'd be happy to volenteer.

Im not really into making DVD2AVI the complete ripper...ive added a ripper that is quite nice & easy to use (using on VStrip.DLL) to rip the files to the harddrive....

SimpleResize...ill add today (you'd be surprised by the requests for it!...Another piece of Tom's genius :) )

Subtitles I know nothing about :( So thats next on my list, ill have to work my way thru the guides, how GKnot does it & all gabest's posts I suppose....

I want BetaTesters that will actually test & report back :) So, if your really interested let me know....

(ps. its not that spectacular....but its not bad...I like the BeSweet support the best...)

Will the BeSweet portion of it allow you to convert to OGG? Keep the Video and Audio files saved seperatly and I can mux them using OGGMux into an OGM container. Reason I am looking at OGM (And MCF) is the whole 800MB on 80 Min CD-R thing that's being worked on. If there is an easy (Few steps) method to get from DVD2OGM/MCF/MP4 on MCF CD-R it will be great! :)

If your talking about my version, yes it does convert to Ogg very nicely....But the interface is still fiddily & besweet two pass (to find the max gain for Ogg) isn't working correctly yet.

Will be soon, by then I may release it....

I somewhere heard besweet could do mormalizing in one pass, too - that would be cool, beacuse it´d be possible to make the first pass video while generating the vbr-ogg (maybe vbr-aac later), during the 2nd pass xvid (or divx) could automatically calculate the size of the video depending on the vbr-audio-size and set it to the videocoded. It even would be cooler if SAVE(or smart dvd2avi) could take the audio and mux it with the video to ogm during the 2nd pass.

Just suggestions ;) - I know it´s going to be the vidtool of the year even without these features ;)

imho, two-pass normalization is only relevant when transcoding to mp2.
if you go for ogg or mp3 - i suggest going on one-pass.

the idea of one-pass is really simple :
- transcode the ac3 into mp3/ogg with floating-point accuracy.
- while you do that, find the maximum gain.
- when finished, store the maximum gain in resulted stream.

mp3 has native support for global_gain, and every player supports it.
as for ogg, this isn't offered by the spec, so i have slightly enhanced it ;).
Tobias said he'll support it in his new upcoming DSF. same goes for Peter Pawlowski (author of the in_vorbis plugin for winamp).

as for OggMux,
may i suggest that Koepi release a cli/dll version of his fine tool ?


btw,
i believe BeSweet.dll is still buggy. didn't had the time to debug it.
i hope to do it next week.

If you need/want another beta-tester I'd be happy to help out. I'm always looking for a better way to rip DVD's and your version of DVD2AVI sounds great. I would definately get back to you with the results(anything to make it better). I've never used DVD2AVI before, except using GKnot, but I'm willing to learn.
