rip speed?

i just bought a 16x toshiba drive but i can only get it to rip at 2x. it speeds up to 5x, but thats only because it gets to the middle of the dvd. why is it so slow? i am using smartripper btw

do you have dma mode enabled in device manager?
get dvdspeed prgrm and see how fast your drive actually is. if it's fast w/ regular file copy then it could be something wrong w/ your smartdripper settings..
or just bad dvd..

2x-5x can happen on a bad/scratched DVD, it's not too bad.
The last one I ripped went from 2x-6x on a 10x Drive (and I know it can do 10x, I had 9.8x speed on other rips)

it doesn't have to be bad scatched DVDs, encoded a dvd some time back that one could only ripp at 1.5x (normally I rip with 8x-10x)
Thought my drive was broken, but testet it on five other system and allways only 1.5x :D

Is this SD-M 1502 ?? Doom9 and myself can sing a song about this piece of crap ... dont expect it to get faster than 3x in average ... but i heard there is a hacked firmware for it :D !

@Selur, I meant bad OR scratched, because the one I was referring to is new and shiny, played only one time, then ripped - it's just a sample of bad production quality, it seems.

On the other hand, my Pioneer 10x DVD is very dependant on good dvd/cd media - I can use it for CDR-quality tests: if this drive reads them at full speed, they must be perfect ;)

I have always found the rip speed
to be dependent on the DVD layout.
Most films on my creative 12x rip at 2-6x
just stuck in jeepers creepers and it ripped at 9x
my fastest so far.
DMA enabled seems to rip at twice the speed as not enabled
but generally does not seem to make that big a difference.

the toshiba drive is locked to a low speed for css encrypted discs.
not very good for ripping, but good for playing dvd-video.

My Pioneer 116 in begin ripped much faster than now, after 8 months.
It started at some 6x and went to 12-15 speed at end of single layer DVD. By dual layer max speed was about 11x.

But now it never goes over 8x... Is laser weaking ? I don't know, I never watch DVD's from it, always copy to HD first.

My first Pioneer (10x) was better, it worked well over one year with same speed.

i also have this drive. as said above it is locked for css encrypted dvds. try a dvd without encryption and you will see that is goes up to 16x in its fastest zone.

i have the crap TOSHIBA SD-M 1502 drive and I read that it is a pure japneese drive and i was very hapy when i bought it. BUT BUT BUT ??
The first problem i faced was when i was trying to get a free region firmware and i realized that this drive was the only drive does not have such a patch. Thanx god!!! finaly the free region patch has been and i was so happy when i installed in my drive and it worked propably. another problem has appeard ... i was thinking that all dvd drives rip at 2x speed but i was wrong and i realized this when i saw my friend ripping a dvd and the speed was 8x.!!! >>> :eek: oh my god

i hope i can find any solution rather than buying a new one.

oddly enough i have the sd-m1212 toshiba drive (one of the older rpc1 drives) and that rips dvds at 3x to about 5.5x max perfectly fine, never had to update the firmware at all. it seems odd that the new drives are as bad as you people say that it is.

i dont like the idea of defending toshiba but you have to agree that most people use their dvd drives for playback and not for ripping. and for this is the speed limit very useful. i just bought the second 1602 because it just works good. (well, except of dvd-ripping ;) )

There is difference in read speed of single and dual layer DVD's.
Only single layer can be read at drive's full speed, dual layer read is aprox. 20-30% slower.

I don't like idea of watching DVD from DVD drive. For saving laser it's much better to copy it to hard drive and watch from it.
And I can watch it even after returning DVD to DVD-teque :)

My samsung 620 only rips at 2x at the most :( ....its like im waiting for it to encode but its only ripping LOL :D aparently it was only
PIO so i upgraded the fireware to the new DMA version ...but still nothing new :(

My ltd-122 sometimes only rips at 2x - win2k device manager showed dma enabled.
Then I looked into the information Ahead's CDInfo tool spit out, guess what, it reported "DMA off"! Now I reinstalled win2k, using the drivers windows came with... device manager shows dma=on, cdinfo reports it to be off.
Installing latest via drivers - hooray, finally cdinfo reports dma to be on. I didn't verify ripping a dvd yet, but I think I get my usual 5-8x again :)

If you have trouble in getting DMA to work, then try to switch the master/slave settings of your DVD-ROM and your CD-R burner. In my case that solved the problem.

does anybody maybe have a link for a hacked firwmare for sd1602 wich would bypas the speed reduction.

i coulde only find a region free firmware.
and I relly hate that 2x-3x rip speed

Apply region-free patch and sell on ebay. Normally the money you get would be enough to buy another one...

I have Intel Mainboard, I'll install its driver and I hope it can solve the problem.
