View Full Version : Settings for Animation and Anime backups?

I've backed up well over 100 movies and generally use the default bitrates and 4 or 5 pass VBR. I also do not change any of the defaults (no temporal smoothing in other words).
I've backed up a few Animation type movies like Toy Story, Titan A.E., and noticed that they do not loook quite as crisp as normal movies usually do, which by the way look like an almost perfect match to the DVD (Great Program)!
I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make them look better like adding Temporal Smoothing, playing with the bitrates, etc. I did a little searching in the forum but couldn't find any info directly relating to my question.
Thanks!

Could you post your dvd2svcd settings when you do an animation?

Here are the settings I use:
Activate DVD ripping: Use Internal routines
DVD2AVI: Using all defaults on this tab (Automatic selected)
Audio: Checked Autodetect Azid gain, tooLame mode Stereo,
Audio 1 English, Audio 1 Bitrate 224, Uncheck downsample
Frameserver: Using all defaults on this tab (only thing checked is
Add ResampleAudio and No editing on the Avisynth Script.
Resize method is BicubicResize
Bitrate: Using all defaults on this tab (only changed CD size to 800
for all)
Encoder: Using Cinema Craft Encoder 2.5, Multipass VBR 5, everything
else defaults
Pulldown: Using all defaults on this tab
bbMPEG: Using all defauls except CD Overlap seconds = 8
Subtitles: I do not rip the subtitles
CD Image: Using all defaults except I use VCDXBuild, enter a CD Label
and Movie Title and also point to a Title Picture for the
movie (usually a bitmap file that I download). I also use
the DVD chapters - PBC Use Selections.
Finalize: Using defaults on this tab
Misc: Use defaults except I set my default output folder and check the
Don't delete any files box
Conversion: Defaults, point to correct IFO file
I use these settings for all my movies and they come out perfect. The animation type movies are very watchable but not as crisp as normal movies. Just wondering if I alter these settings for animated movies, can I get a better picture?
BTW - my DVD player is a Pioneer DVC503 and I found that the threshold for the bitrate is right around 2500 so upping the bitrate above this will not work for me.
Can you see anything in my settings that I could tweak to get a better picture?
Thanks!

I always use temporal smoother on animation, particularly those made by the well known mouse :-) . I find it really helps to cut down noise on animation.
I usually try to squeeze the whole movie onto a single 90min disk, with lowish audio bitrate. Quality is acceptable, and there is no "dady, its stopped " shout in the middle of the movie :-))
Go on be a  use temporal smoother !

Thanks for the info - how many passes do you usually do (currently doing 4-5 pass VBR but with TS turned on, it might take a year to finish one movie).
I've read that some people get acceptable results from 1 pass VBR with TS turned on.
