Is there any way to save the audio transcoding parameters listed in the GKnot DivX 4 guide?
(I can save an AVS job and retrieve later but the audio parameters doesn't seem to save with it)

Everytime I get to this point I enable Expert mode per the guide but then have to change whats there.

I always use per the guide:

-z1 -b1 -c normal -L -3db

--alt-preset 128

The only change I make is if I think I might want to split and join I put "cbr" in between "preset" and "128"

I can't get virtual dub to work otherwise when splitting and joining, not sure If I'm doing something else wrong but this is the only way I can get it to work.

Also, can the audio transcoding parameters be in any order?
Some of them are there by default, can I just add those that aren't?

And, what would I lose by just using the MP3/128 selection and not selecting expert mode?

Sorry if any of these have already been asked or answered, I am following the guides but still trying to learn whats happening.

TIA for any/all advice.

CBR may be a fine choice for music, but reduces overall quality for movies. Silences get as many bits as noisy sections.

Just use Nandub when working with avi files that have abr/vbr sound, as GKnot does, and as the Guides/FAQ recommend.
