I am having some problem with extracting xvid from CD after it was burnt. If a short test clip is burnt, then there is not a problem extracting it from CD; However, when a full movie is burnt, I have problem copying it back to HD. Putter complained about Data Error ( cyclic redundancy check ).
I capture the movie with virtual dub and encode the audio to mp3 afterward as always. Burn it to CD (80min) using Nero 5.5.x.x with ISO level2 Mode 2/XA.
The movie playback without any errors, and I can search back and forth throughout the movie with WMP6.4. Only problem with copying it back to HD.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Mode 2 lacks the error correction that Mode 1 has.
I'm surprised your file even works at all in Mode 2, you should be burning your CDs with mode 1 AFAIK.

My mistake for saying Mode2/XA. I checked with Nero once again and It is indeed in Mode1. So I burnt another CD using the same file and again it has the same problem. This time I put extra files into the CD as well and they are fine when extracting them back to HD.

pls confirm this has nothing to do with 1/april.

well, i've tried it on four different computers and all of them are saying the same thing. It will play the clip but it refused to copy the clip over to the HD. I've tried it with several different media as well :(
This is not an april fool thing.

Don't use the newer version of nero. Use 5.5.2.4 or lower.
And when dumping an avi into hard drive, you can use virtual dub to dump the bit before the crc error first, then dump the bit after teh crc error.
open 1st segment of movie b4 crc, then append the next avi segment. Use direct stream for audio and video and save the final avi which should be crc free.
I don't see how this was related to Xvid though.

Ok,
I don't know what version is currently on my system. Probably the 2nd released version (not the latest). However, I'll check when I go home tonite.
I tried dumping with Virtual Dub and it too read for about 20sec and then crashed. I don't know if it's video or audio that does the crash, but i'll verify.

maybe make an image from the cd using clonecd (http://www.elby.org/english/corp/index.htm), then attach this image with daemon-tools (http://www.daemon-tools.com/), and see if u can read the file from the virtual drive...
just a guess, although it definately doesn't seem to be related to xvid...
cheers

Try to use ONLY a cdwriter in the IDE cannel.
I have same prob when I use CDROM + CDRW device in the same IDE cannel (both nero, clonecd, ecc.)

Virtual dub was supposed to crash when you reach the crc error!
Now play the file that Virtual dub DUMPED, get the time that it crashed at. Then open Virtual dub again, seek to a time after the point it crashed and start using direct stream to dump the rest of the movie. Join the 2 segments. But if there is more than one crc error, you have have to keep doing it several times.
I had that CRC problem too whenever I install the latest version of nero. My burner is a scsi and does not share that channel. Amazingly enougth, when I returned to older version of nero it no longer had crcs. The latest version I can use without crcs is 5.5.2.4

1. If Mode2/XA does not have error checking then why does the cd not have a larger indicated capacity than Mode1 (in nero compilation graph) and,
2. If Mode2/XA is not likely to work with xvid because of the lack of error correcting, then why do VideoCD's have no problem?
I thought this might be a way to squeeze some extra bits out of an xvid CD, but alas, this doesn't seem to be so.

Mode2 CDs seem to be larger as no space is used for the CRC checksums. The CD is basically larger than it normally seems (with Mode1).
VideoCDs don't have (much) problems with that, because MPEG has some sort of integrated error correction method, so they don't need hardware-side checks. Sometimes it looks weird though (colored macroblocks, smeared motion).

If you feel like asking on a different forum could have helped, we could move this thread. Just say so.

@teegedeck
I have found the source of the problem. It is indeed caused by CRC error within the clip as Kastro68 and Fufo have mentioned in this thread. I used VDub to cut out the bad CRC part and all is fine.
Nero version is 5.5.5.1 and it could be the bad deed here. I'll reinstall 5.5.1.8 and check it again.
Thanks @all for helping me with this issue :D

Think to a plain text file, what happens if there is some error?
just some letter will be omitted or wont be readable, but you will able to read the rest of the file.
In a exe,if you lose one byte all the file wont work.
avis are built like exe files, mpgs like plain text, you can merge them with dos copy command too.
But a VCD can be at max 650mb,not 750, then its burned in mode1,why?
because a mpg stream with AUDIO is easy to corrupt too.
Since SVCD can be burned in mode2,i think that the audio is dubbed in a new way respect to the old VCD format,a way that doesnt suffer for errors.
Avis wont never work w/o error correction, mpg1 only if you change the audio/video syncronization.

Well, plenty of disinformation again, movmasty. :(
VCDs can hold up to 800MB. It's stored as Mode2, form2.
AS well as SVCD.
MPEG4 can _of course_ be stored that way and would be error robust - it's the container that matters.
So if you burn an *.ogg (*.ogm) as mode2 form2, you'll be able to play it back without problems.
But since avi doesn't support (or well, maybe it's in the specs, but no program supports that) timestamps it won't be able to find the correct place to "restart" the playback.
This might be as well a little flawed, but isn't as fundamentalistic wrong as...
Best regards,
Koepi

vcds and data cds and audio cds all have circ encoding . its a basic error correction that helps agains most minor defects (which most cds end up having) the forefathers of mpeg purposefully chose mode2/form 2 and made mpeg in a way that errors in the stream would not effect the whole mpeg. avis were intended to be read from error free sources and cant shrug off errors a streaming format like mpeg can
i wrote a bunch of mode2 cds with avis on them because thats all my old cdrom would read.. well.. most of the cds are unreadable :(.. the EXTRA error correcting ability of mode-1's (edc/parity) comes in handy

What about AC3, does that need the error correcting data? I have a miniDVD I would like to make and was wondering if Form2 was possible? The video is mpeg2 but the audio is maybe some sensitive format
