Missing overlay in MicroDVD

Since a few days, MicroDVD tells me it cannot detect the overlay color of my video board, and therefore disables the feature. My graphic card is All-In-Wonder Radeon. The default driver controls have no enable/disable overlay feature. I've installed "Rage3DTweak" and checked the advanced settings, but found no magic button for overlay. My Logitech cordless keyboard will, however, display correctly the text associated with the multimedia keys (though I'm not 100% sure it uses overlay, too). Could somebody give me a hint to fix the problem? Thanks in advance!

ok, i think this was quite a tricky one, and i post the solution i've found to help somebody else who falls in the same trap.
so, searching ati's support area gave no results. the only certain thing was that the tv tuner and any other software using overlay didn't initialize because it detected no active overlay. running dxdiag i've noticed that in the "display" tab the "directdraw acceleration" was shown as "disabled". searching the web about how to enable it, i got this solution:

"One day my DirectDraw hardware acceleration stopped working. I couldn't watch DVDs and videos would run really slowly if I scaled them. (DxDiag said that hardware acceleration was "not available" for DirectDraw). Re-installing DirectX 8.1 or my video card drivers didn't fix it. When I even got a new video card and it was still disabled, I decided I should look around and try to fix it.

It took me a long time to find this bizarre trick, and I didn't believe it would actually work, but it did.

Windows 2000 comes with netmeeting. (In Accessories... Communication). Run this. In the options menu, select remote desktop sharing and follow the wizard through, as if you are installing it. After it's started, go to the same option and disable remote desktop sharing. I did this (this was seriously my last ditch effort), and lo and behold, it worked! DXDIAG should now show hardware acceleration being enabled."

well, it worked for me, too... now microdvd runs again error-free.
