View Full Version : Good DSF News....
After speaking to BetaBoy last night, he confirmed (& got proof sent to me) that the OpenDivX Decore (& all its code) are under the GPL License.
This means that my DSF modifications are GPL & I should be able to whack them straight into the CVS :)
....Well I thought it was good news :)

Hm, I don't want to touch your good humour, but I have some doubts about the legal state of decore:
It's a long time ago now (in fact nine months, I guess) since Junto announced a GPLed decore. However until today, all decore sources from project mayo (either the cvs or the zipped version) still include the OpenDivX license header. So if DXN really wanted to release their decore source under the GPL, why haven't they changed the license headers then? nine months should be fairly enough time for this task (even for DXN).
Moreover Junto's announcement got never confirmed. gruel and me <a href="http://forums.projectmayo.com/viewtopic.php?topic=2647&forum=3">asked</a> for confirmation on PM's boards, but our question was never answered. And I have to agree to gruel that as long as the source still refer to the OpenDivX license, it is NOT GPLed. Noone can expect us to change the license headers ourselves, solely the original author can do this.
You wrote that BetaBoy confirmed you about the GPL release, but BetaBoy is no member of DXN anymore, so this is no official statement either, right? But I maybe wrong: You said he proved it to you? Could you share this proof with us, please?
Sorry for not giving more evidence isibaar (as I have very little time right now :( )
But Ive got a copy of the email from Darius (aka Junto) sent very recently (BetaBoy & Marc Dukette are off doing there own thing....im, not sure how much im allowed to say)
Marc is in the process of changing the headers with DXN permission :D
Ill send you a copy of what Ive got tomorrow isibaar :)
Cheers,

You can trust BetaBoy and Marc, but if you want i can ask Darrius... If you do it yourself he will ask you to join DXN and we don't want that :D

I think this is better:

I think its a little "hush hush" until Marc has at least fixed the headers....
Im not sure about Junto, apparently he will not return any emails sent by Dan...So I doubt he'd answer any from me.
Anyway Marc forwarded me the email from Junto & ive forwarded that to isibaar...so I think thats proof enough :)

It's really hard to have answers from Darrius, he is really busy. Anyway this is a great (busy) guy

Btw I am angry that B-frames support was a joke :) :p
Darrius doesn't sound like one of BetaBoy's favourite people however..... :)

Someone mentionned that your AAC filter is missing on PowerDivX.com and Hydrogenaudio :D

For what it's worth I can verify that I set in on the chat when BetaBoy gave the news to Nic:D
Just one more confirmation.

Isibaar... I can confirm everything that Nic has stated... and have several email's from Darrius giving Marc permission to GPL the OpenDivX Decore only.
I do want personally thank Marc for his persistance in asking DXN in getting this done. It has been only after several months of persuading them that they said OK to this.
and while I consider Junto and me still on speaking terms since I left DivXNetworks he has not IM'd me since I told him I was talking to ON2 about a job ;-(... oh well... guess that speaks volumes on his true nature and I am better off. I just though better of him.
Marc and I have talked and he will begin marking the OpendivX decoder in CVS with the GPL headers later this week. BTW... you can check CVS and you will find that the Pocket DivX player code is already marked GPL.

Marc yesterday remark all the OpenDivX Decore for the proper GPL headers. He has forwarded it off to Junto and made some specific comments on issuing an 'official' statement that the decore is now GPL. This will keep everyone (including me) happy.
On a side note to the XviD team... you should STILL have the goal as as a milestone to remove the last bits of the OpenDivX decore that still remain. This way it furthers seperation from you and DXN/PM.

True. I don't believe there's anything from DXN/PM in the XviD CVS at the moment - of course some of it is derived from encore2, but it's been rewritten to Michael's satisfaction.
The MPEG4 spec itself has recommendations for postprocessing, perhaps an eventual goal could be implementing it instead of ideas from decore.

From my very very poor understanding of the MPEG-4 specs, I think the deblocking algo is derived from the MPEG-4 spec....Im not sure about deringing however...Ill have to look it up :)

From the point of view of copyrights (but not patents) it is perfectly okay to have exactly the same algorithm. It is just copying the text that is restricted. I can use the algorithm from anything published and not violate any copyrights.
So certainly the current deringing is fine.

these are very good news :)
anyone tested if something was removed from decore? (i.e. it's bad news IF postprocessing not going under gpl) :)

avih... from my understanding NOTHING besides the headers have been touched. Marc did the header change himself and justhad DXN ok them. he uploaded them to CVS after he got the ok.
So if they were edited... it was not by him ;-)... anyways I am sure that -h, Nic, Isibaar should double check... just to be certain.
Marc is trying to get them to post NEWS on the frontpage of projectmayo.com announcing this... but seeing as the last time they posted news was December 20, 2001... I doubt it.
