700MB cd-r limitations?

Out of curiosity, how large of an avi file could be copied to a 700MB cd-r? Reason I ask is, when I use to encode vcd’s, I could normally copy mpeg-1 files that were 800-811mb on a standard 700mb cd-r. There was error correction control that would enable us to copy at least 100mb more then the 700mb. So I’m wondering if there is error correction with avi (divx) files? A lot of time when I encode divx, I tend to push it to the max of 1400MB for two 700mb cd-r’s, and sometimes I go over. Anyone know the limitations?

it's not a limitation of the file format (i.e. avi or mpeg) but of the file system.

indeed, vcd and svcd don't have error correction codes, so it may contain more "data". naturally, the players and pc-cdrom support this file system.

so if u use standard burn for any file (including avi) u can get about 700M.

i also thought of using a different file system (i.e. the one that's used with svcd) to gain bigger actual data size so i can put avi files on it. i didn't try too hard. it seems quite possible, but in few tries i couldn't do it.

if u find an easy method to accomplish that, i'll be glad to hear.
