After having encoded some movies, I have found the following:
For 1 or 2 CD encoding, Quarter Pel + GMC makes for a very good movie. Especially the 1-CD-quality I find astounding.
However, in animated movies (and maybe in real ones, too), when there is a scene without movement and only colours or textures changes, GMC just swallows that scene.
Happened to me in Alantis where the bad guy was ripped with a crystal and turned to .... er .. stone. That scene was simply not there afterwards. Encoding the same movie without GMC led to a nice rip, except that it seemed a little bit more grainy, especially around the black borders of the characters, which are well defined in that movie.
On the other hand, adding B-frames makes a rip a lot smaller, but to me it seems that the movie looses some definition and appears a bit washed out.
Be sure to NOT use Quarter-Pel with B-frames as that looks somewhat ugly, don't ask me why.
What are your experiences?
