Basically, in the DSF you set the maximum amount of post-processing you want. Then whenever playback becomes too CPU-intensive, temporarily disable some of the post-processing. When CPU-usage decreases, reenable them. That way, playback will remain smooth even if CPU-usage spikes.
This would be great for people with not-so-great CPUs. In Nic's DSF, I can enable all six post-processing levels. However, there are just a few scenes where all six levels will cause playback to be jerky.
