View Full Version : nForce can't burn DVD-R/W :(.

I got an Abit NV7m nForce based motherboard built around a Athlon XP 1800+. No matter what I do, un-install/re-install ASPI, reinstall Windows, change cables, change media, change busses, activate/deactivate DMA, switch OS'es (2K and XP), my new Pioneer 104 will not burn DVD-R/W on my nForce based PC :(. Sucks. I finally found some cheap media that works in my Panasonic RP56, and now it seems my nForce based system doesn't work with my burner. I had to take out the HDD carry that over to my 440BX based PIII system and use the 104 on that machine to get my DVD burner to work.

Anyways, just a heads up. Don't know if there are many other people out there what have a combination of an nForce based system and a DVD burner that can confirm this, but I just wanted other people to be aware of it.

BTW, I used the latest NERO and PrimoDVD. In both cases, it errored out right in the beginning "Error communicating with device". CDR works just fine at 8x with the 104 on my nForce however :/.

Maybe you have already made it but I'll mention it again then.
Get the latest BIOS drivers from MSI and flash your BIOS.

On their site they give loud and clear instructions and I hope that will help because I tel everyone how good and cheap that mobo is.

Thanks murattttt,

Actually, like any good PC owner will do, he will check to see if there is a BIOS update for his board. But I have an Abit NV7m board, not an MSI. And there is only one BIOS release for this board :(. But yes, this board is fantastic. I would highly recommend it, but of course, I need to know if my situation is isolated. Maybe more owners of this combo could chime in and add their 2 cents.

Strange how I must be the only person that runs a DVD-RW drive on an nForce system :).

But, I got it to work finally!!!

What I had to do was a bit strange. I went into the CMOS and disabled DMA for the bus that the 104 was hooked up to. I then set it to PIO mode 4. I did this just for shits & giggles, since, afterall, I exhausted just about every fix known to man. I booted into Windows and checked the device manager, sure enough primary slave was running in PIO mode 4. I fired up PrimoDVD created my project and hit the write button. I expected the tray to spit out my RW disc like it has so many times before in the past, I mean after all, PIO Mode 4 for DVD burning! I got to out of my gord right!? Then the imppossible happened. The write lights came on and whollah! It was burning away! It is still burning at the time of this writing! WTF??!! PIO Mode 4!!!

I really don't know man, can't really explain it, but it works now.

On a side note, the Panasonic RP56 reads DVD-RW!!!!!
