Saving Private Ryan won't encode

I was trying to encode SPR with 640 x 352 with XviD MPEG-quantifisation.

Maybe you think I am crazy, but I was aiming for a 5-cd rip.

The problem is that the stats-file of the first pass is corrupt.
I think this is because the first pass avi is around 5 GB.
I think this should not matter, because I have NTFS.
But Virtualdub seems to crash right at the end of the first pass.

I tried to make avi-segments of 2 GB each, but then also the stats-file was corrupt.

Can someone help me out here...or is it just not possible to make such a giant 5-cd rip?

That's odd..

Well, if you're willing to take the time to do another 1st pass worth, you could try this..

Do two 1st passes, one with the first half of the movie into like video1 and the other with the second half into video2, find the total for the two first passes, encode the two halves using the appropriate fraction of their sizes, and then join & split as needed.

Thanx alot...I had to trim the first pass into three pieces with the avs-script. Virtualdub was crashing at the end when the first pass avi-file was bigger dan 2 GB.

After that I calculated the desired sizes of the second passes based upon the sizes of the three first pass avi-files

It worked out just fine. Now I have got a perfect 5 CD-rip.

I think I would have preferred SVCDs if doing 5 cds...

Yes Foxer. It is a beautiful sharp bicubic rip.
I just had to use 5 cd's to respect the movie. The AC3-track takes up alot of space too you know. :-)

Why SVCD? For a standalone-player this is good, but not for PC-viewing. XviD beats SVCD at that point.

And if your standalone-player supports it I would go for XSVCD so that bitrate peaks of 9800 kbit/s can be used.

I have often (you think I'd learn) seen a crash with output files over 2 GB from Xvid/Vdub. But 2 pass always seemed to work when I remembered to specify a segmented avi file.

And does anybody know how to limit peak bit rates in Xvid?

But the movie is very good and worth 5cd's but i did my rip on 3cd

I now know why the first pass always crashed when the size became above 2 GB. It was a bug in virtualdub in combination with avisynth.

Fix for crash when producing large files from Avisynth

Two bugs here: VirtualDub was passing through the dwSampleSize value from Avisynth even when it didn't match the frames generated after compression and/or filtering, and the AVI2 output handler was crashing when the output file exceeded 2GB and no audio stream was being processed. It took me a long time to figure out what was going on here, and this bug may have been responsible for some applications rejecting output from VirtualDub.

I am glad that is cleared up now.
