Should I increase the video bit rate or lower the DRF max compression setting?

Hi,

I’m converting some home videos over to divx. I’ve captured using Huff at 640x480 and am using Nandub with divx 3.11a.

I originally used a video bit rate of 1200 with a DRF setting of 2min/16max (the default settings) but found the final video to be a bit too blocky. I’m not sure if I should increase the video bit rate and leave the DRF settings alone or leave the video bit rate as is and lower the DRF maximum compression down to maybe 10 or 12.

Any suggestions which would provide the better result? Thanks.

if size doesnt really matter i would say raise the bitrate. On a "fullscreen" and high motion source that you probably have from a handheld camera a higher bitrate would help, also lower the max drf to 8 - 10.

if you want to keep it as small as possible. keep the bitrate, and lower the res to around 576x432 and drf's to 8 - 10 again.

remember that blocks appears beyond drf 8,
so you could just lower the max drf to 8
in this case nandub will take bytes from slow frames,those that use low drf,
if you are not happy also with the slow motion parts quality,
then raise the bitrate a little.
also to set the min drf to 3 could help a little.

use debugview and watch which DRFs are used along the movie.

I really need a explain for this:

If i have a high motion clip (=heavy changes (?)

the DRF (to reach good quality)*should* be lower 2-4 or because the

motion is high(the eyes don't see the deatils) this frames *must* be

at DRFs 4-12, also low motion means=still frames=Zero

high motion =heavy changes
low motion =still frames
If you have a high motion clip,
you need a higer bitrate to encode than a low motion video
at the same time, you can use a higer max drf,
3-8 will be ok.

or try to encode the second pass using drf and motion value instead of bit rate:

-do the 1st pass with debug view open
-in nandub-sbc-bitrate, click on Curve Compression-Calc..
-in debug view will appear the motion of the movie
-if the motion level is higer than 150 put a value of sensitivity higer than 10,if lower,lower than 10,5-20 are the values to use
-in the drf tab set:
3-3
4-4 mot 20
5-5 mot 100
6-6 mot 200
7-7 mot 260
8-8 mot 290
or somethin similar.
