View Full Version : DivX5 effects on DivX3 and 4 - please confirm

Have I got this right:

If I install DivX5 Pro, it will:

* Completely eliminate DivX4 so that I can no longer playback or encode using DivX4 (tho there is a workaround it seems, to allow the 2 codecs to coexist)

* Takeover all DivX3 content playback, but still allow me to encode rips using NanDub v1.0rc2 and DivX3.11alpha (there might be a workaround that still allows DivX3.11alpha to playback DivX3 content)

If there are workarounds which are specific for WIN Me, could you please point me to them.

thanx

Some user have reported DivX5 takes over DivX3 playback, for others DivX3 is still being used. I don't know why yet.

The only workarounds I know of are in the sticky's. But maybe someone else who's using WinME knows if they work?

DivX5 will have no influence on DivX3 encoding.

DivX5 will replace the DivX4 codec and playback filter (solutions for that are on the board.. though I prefer divx5 over divx4 and see no reason to keep the old one).

DivX5 will take over DivX3 playback. However, nobody has provided some proof that it would actually lead to a degradation. I did a test with DivX4 and found that there's no difference playing DivX3 using the DivX3 or DivX4 filters and as the DivX3 playback code should be the same the same should apply for DivX5. You can keep divx3 playing divx3 following the sticky on this board... as I said I don't really see a reason for it (and eventually divx3 will die so I think it's much better to use alternative filters for now and see if there's any problems so they'll be fixed by the time we won't install the divx3 filters anymore). But just to make sure when I do test I do the following (did so with divx4 as well): regsvr32 divxdec.ax /u to play divx3 using the divx3 filter, and regsvr32 divxdec.ax to re-activate the divx5 filter (for divx5 playback).

Yesterday I watched a film encoded in DivX3.11a ;-) through the DivX5 decoder filter, and it looked _very_ ugly. After following the sticky I played the same film again, this time using the original DivX3 decoder filter, and guess what? Playback was nice again...

@doom9:
I agree, as long as you don't run into problems, stay with the newer filters.

it looked _very_ uglyWhat exactly do you mean by "very ugly". I have never had any problems playing divx3.11 videos with either divx 4 or divx 5 filters. I even think they look better this way because post-processing in the divx 3 playback was rather crappy at maximum "quality".

So, is it just that I'm not experiencing a certain problem, or is it a matter of taste (but then, you couldn't say "very ugly", because the differences are really very minimal, imo)

Well, the colors were wrong, the picture was almost unrecognizable for some seconds, and it seemed to have more blocking artefacts (maybe they were just more visible because of the colors).

ok, then it seems like this is some kind of overlay problem in your case (the stuff that sometimes happens in divx 4 or divx 5 playback).

I was wondering already if I was blind because I find divx 5 playback nice for all divx files ;)

if i want to be able to encode both DivX3 and DivX5, is there any order in which I have to install the codecs? or doesnt it matter?..

divx 5 has no effect on divx 3 (for encoding, playback is another matter). So just install as you like :)

btw.. I've asked for a divx5 regular codec only installer and a possibility to decide whether the new filter should play divx3 content or not (as the divx4 filter does).. and I was told we should get that in time.
