View Full Version : Ogg Subtitler problem under win2000 - please help!

I've been experimenting with the latest DS-Filters from Tobias for ogg and subtitling with quite some success. I've been able to mux a nice .ogm file with divx5 for video and two vorbis streams, and a .srt stream for the subs.
Everything worked perfectly on my Athlon 1.33GHz 1gig RAM GeForce3 Windows XP system - and I knew from various tests that the pure video clips also played nicely on a small P3-300MHz system, so everything was great - right?
Then the big shock struck. The subtitler filter would for some reason make the video playback extremely choppy during playback on my Athlon 900MHz 512meg RAM GeForce200MX Windows 2000 system, which should be more than capable to render all easily. Same for the P3-MHz system, also W2k. Even though the CPU load would rarely pass 50% on the medium Athlon, playback would be very distorted (the same way divx5 content reacts when the CPU load hits the ceiling). Deinstalling the subtitler would immediately return the playback to smooth on both systems.
Scanning around I've found hints that the filter might give trouble on w2k, especially if the hardware YUV overlay wasn't activated. So how can I find out if it is, and activate it? Is this a known problem, and is there any way to solve or circumvent it?

i think i have the same problem, and i have win2k too. but my wmp6.4 wants to download a codec, and then plays terribly slowly and with only a few colors. you didnt descibe this happend on your machines, so im not 100% sure its the same thing...
tobias said requesting a codec would be a hint for the overlay not to be available.(is this proper english?)
but as you have geforcecards its not a driver-question, as i thought first (i have a v3 -> no support any more).
in fact u're the first one (i read) writing it could be sth with win2k, i only know that win9x users had massivly problems with subDS.
hope tobias finds some time to find some bugs ;)

hofmetzger: DivX5 is only valid for 24- and 32-bit colours, I'm almost certain that this is the reason for the download. Set the colour depth of your video card to 24 or 32 and you should be fine and the downloads will stop. At least they stopped for me.
Still, the subtitler problems remain somehow ... I hope that Tobias will have an idea ...

yeah that helps. thx!
btw tobias wrote in another thread:
"- If your graphics card has little memory please try to reduce the resoulution/colordepth. Please note that changing the colordepth doesn't affect the image quality in YUV mode because the image will be draw using the corresponding YUV color space intead of the RGB color space."
...so i didnt try increasing colordepth. now it seems to work.
dont know if these are different things i try to compare, ogm seems to be very complicated, but thats the reason i like it: so much to "explore"!
still i have (better but still) poor performance, but i think this is relatet to my poor pc, so i cant help in this point.

Hi. I think that I was this problem. When I play a .ogm file with subtitles all goes perfect, but if I try to maximize it, the video plays too slow (my system is K7 700 and Elsa Gladiac MX). But I saw a box in whitch you can put the aspect ratio of your film (in WMP 6 file->properties->Subtitle Mixer->Aspect Ratio), I think that this box has 16:9 by default. I calculate the aspect ratio of the video I have and put the original aspect ratio (12:5) in this box and now the video plays ok, with subtitles (this subtitles are in the video, not in the black zone).
I hope this will help you.

yes i can confirm this. without the black bars it plays much smoother.
didnt tobias worte somwhere the bars cost about 1% cpu? per pixel or what?;)
@tobias: nice idea with the black bars, but in my opinion its not too bad if the subtitles are _in_ the picture, and under this circumstances
it would be nice to disable the bars completely for those with slow machines...

@tobias: Can you add a option in the codec to play the video in the original aspect ratio? I know that some programs (like powerdivx 4) have this util, you can play the video in 16:9, in 4:3 and in original aspect ratio

@ Hawkins: isnt it the same i wrote?
no bars -> original aspect ratio
btw its not a "codec", its an directshowfilter, but tobias can explain this better...

I just want to outline the aspect ratio in the mixer refers to the aspect ratio of your screen. I use this aspect ration just to determine if it makes sense to add the black bars. (To make use of the whole screen).
If you want only the subtitle function without any format change you can set the aspect ration e.g. to 100 : 1 (which actually disbles it unless you have a movie with 600 x 3 lines)
In general performance problems occur only if the overlay can not be used (because in this case the CPU must amplify the image). Please check if you have DirectX 8.1 installed (dxdiag) and if it still doesn't work please open the file in graphedit (file -> render file) and send me a screen shot (alt + print screen; paintbrush edit -> paste) together with the following data:
- Your current resoulutin and color depth
- The model of your graphics card

wrote a short html with screenshots:
http://www.schlachtbank.de/divx/shots.html
but as far as i tested, i'm assuming that the problem occurs if the subtitlefilter tries to enlarge the picture. this makes the overlay not to be available. dont know what the shots can tell you any further info's, but i dont want to keep u from lookin them:)
my craphicscard: v3 3000 (enough memory for 1024x768 and 32bit)
dx v 8.1
win2k
amd k6-2 450

This was a misunderstanding I meant a screenshot of the graphedit after using the function "render file" from the file menu.
