i didnt find a solution. the only clues i found are
Have you tried using Direct Sound as the audio device instead of WaveOut?
and
Disable or uninstall the Morgan Stream Switcher filter. This filter can cause playback problems(e.g. stutter/skipping).
but i dont know how to do either of them.

eeek...we've been spammed by Peter. Thats alot of threads.
Peter, per the forum rules please be more specific if you expect help with these sort of problems. It would be most helpful if we knew hardware and OS configs.
You also didn't mention if you read the AC3 FAQ. I'll assume you didn't since you neve mentioned it. You might find that it helps:)

i thought there is no need to mention the obvious, the forum rules told me to.
no, serious, i read it, i can easyly prove, since this is quoted from it:
Disable or uninstall the Morgan Stream Switcher filter. This filter can cause playback problems(e.g. stutter/skipping).
i thought i was as specific as i could be.
os is win2k, what do you mean with os config?
hardware is an asus a7v266 motherboard which has a sound chip that never disappointed me before, and as i said, with winMe ac3 playback worked.
maybe it would help if someone could tell me how to do these:
Have you tried using Direct Sound as the audio device instead of WaveOut?
and
Disable or uninstall the Morgan Stream Switcher filter. This filter can cause playback problems(e.g. stutter/skipping).
PS: i apologize if you feel spammed, i always read the faq and guides before i post, with searching the forum i often have no success since i dont know how another person with the same problem might have put it.

So from the info you have given me I'll assume you dont have SP2 installed for Win2k? This what I was refering to partly about the OS config. Anyways, make sure you have SP2 installed as it solved some SPDIF/AC3 issues.
You aren't specific about the built-in sound chip though so I have no idea if its a driver issue or what. I'll assume you have the latest version or have tried different versions.
Wave Out or Direct Sound is set within your player. All you have to do is browse through the options of something like BSplayer. Look in the audio config and it should be right in plain sight. PowerDivx can be accessed from the options menu as well. Don't ask me about WiMP, I dont use it.

C-Media CMI8738 audio controller
