How good is Xvid's keyframe placement?

This is the question I asked myself, after fiddling with some MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encodings. I noticed that keyframe placement was often not frequent enough. Using TMPGenc I was able to use the manual keyframe insertion program to go through the movie (a short trailer) frame by frame and insert the proper keyframes. It missed about 5 important places for keyframes in a 2 min trailer...that's a lot.

The point is, if MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoding, at least in TMPGenc has hiccups with keyframe insertion and from what I hear nandub also has problems with keyframe insertions (that's where Gknot can help), does Xvid suffer from this problem? Also, if I want, can I manually insert the keyframes and import the text file containing the info into Xvid to encode from that (like TMPGenc)?

The Xvid stats file is exactly the same as Nandub. And I am quite pleased with Xvid's keyframe placement. So either way you will be happy with it or be able to correct it just like Nandub. :)

XviD will place an I-frame if and only if it would require less space than a P-frame. If you *ever* see a string of I-frames in an XviD encode, rest assured that they would take up *more* space if they were forced to be P-frames. P-frames aren't always smaller, thanks to the motion vector map being too hard to compress.
