Hi I'm not an expert on either of these things, but I was wondering, could you make a miniDVD with a small bitrate that makes it the same filesize as a SVCD of the same movie and you could keep the AC3 too? or would it look like crap because of the higher resolution? it seems like if there are the same number of bits used to store the movie the quality should be the same. i am probably wrong though

For a minidvd you use 352x480/576 (aming at same size as svcd) where you would use 480x480/576 for svcd, hence you will need less bits for video frames. Normal AC3 tracks are from 224 to 448, so might loose alittle bits here, but I will think you get them back from the lower res and also the higher max bitrate (9.8 mbit). Use CCE with more than 2 passes and you should get a very good result with 16:9 and the precious AC3 sound.
PS. If your player supports miniDVD with 480*480/576 then you can use the same resolution as your SVCD and I will bet you will get better picture and sound (of course)
