View Full Version : Cut and Paste produces lockups while DVD2SVCD is on

Hello,
my problem ist this:
While DVD2SVCD is running under Win98, and I cut and paste from other applications into other applications (i.e. IE 5.5, FTP95LE etc.), these programs freeze. I can still close them using the Cntl-Alt-Del Menu, but it is a bit odd. DVD2SVCD still ploughs on and does the job, without minding this too much. Since my PC seems very stable otherwise, I am somewhat lost to the reasons. Now I've seen DVD2SVCD cut and paste into forms that pop up en route, so i guess it might be interfering with this mechanism. Is there any info on this and what term is used here to describe it, so I can search the forum for solutions.
Thanks for your help.

It is probably due to the fact that Avisynth is a severe memory hog and CCE pushes the CPU to it's max. If I have less then 384mb in my system and do not put DVD2SVCD on Idle under the Misc tab, under process priority I will get this also. There was a time not long ago when you couldn't use your computer at all. It's just the nature of the beast.

Another thing, when i used Windows98 se it would lock up when i tried other tasks. I then switched 2 Windows XP and the lockups stopped while multitasking. Like mark stated tho atleast 384megs of ram would help u out alot.

dvd2svcd does not cut'n'paste anything, it uses purely the windows messaging system.

Thanks for the Input.
I currently have 256 MB, and do run DVD2SVCD on normal settings, since I have an XP1700+. Side Performance isn't great, but for surfing, downloads etc. it works. Except for cuting and pasting. That will kill the application alsmost always. I didn't want to upgrade to 512MB because I like Win98se and have read that this is too much. So maybe I should stick in another 128 MB of RAM?
thank you

PS: I think the bug also occurs while DVD2AVI is running before encoding...

I don't know where you have read that 512mb is too much. That is just ridiculous. Every site that I trust recomends 512 mb for the systems they spec, even for 98 SE. Just check out www.sharkyextreme.com or www.anandtech.com somebody is pulling your leg.
As for setting DVD2SVCD in Idle mode. I have seen little to no performance drop. All it does is give your other programs higher priority to resources. If you are using programs with little footprints this won't affect the encode much at all. The only time this will happen is if you play a game of Quake or something and I wouldn't advise this when you are encoding at all.

If my memory serves me right "no punn" intended haha.. but when i heard the news of Windows 98 Se and Memory the article i read stated that anything over 512 megs of ram would not be used. Now far as what i got out of the whole article is it would not be used if at all so anything above 512 megs of ram is a waiste of money. It then went on 2 say that if you needed or wanted more ram then 512 you should upgrade to windows 2000 or windows xp.

Not only that but you can get an inoperable Win98/ME machine if you put more than 512 MB in it (it blue-screen's).

Good advice even if you don't use more than 512 MB of RAM.

My system and yours is not nuch different and I have no problems with lockups. I'm running Win XP Pro on an AMD XP 1800 with 256 Meg of DDR and not only doesn't my system lock up, I run Adobe Photo, leech the NGs and print like a demon while running DVD2SVCD. There is one condition though. I have to load these programs BEFORE CCE kicks in or else I'm doomed (no pun intended)!

I have updated to 384 MB, set the priority to idle, have the latest build 1.09b3, but the problem still persists. Cutting kills any application while CCE is running. NO CCE Errors ever so far (knocking on wood)
