I tried to ask this at divx.com but the forum won't register me, so I'll try here.

I see there is divx 5.0 for linux
Is this an x86 or PPC linux version, or both?
What other versions are there for linux? 4.0? 3.11a?

.. I'm thinking 3.11a was only for windows so I would need a Win-box to encode 3.11a but could watch them on a linux-box

Version 5.0 is decoder only at the moment (i.e. you cannot encode)

There is also a 4.02 version wich can both decode and encode.

Both version can decode divx 3.11 & divx 4.

So yes you can watch movie on your linux box (that's what i do).

If you wand to rip, have a look at "transcode" and "mencoder"

If you plan to use divx5 codec for playback, be sure to upgrade your player as the API has changed a bit.
