View Full Version : Doom9 CCE guide: is 1 multipass really enough?

Hi!
SiC pointed me out to use 2 or 3 multipasses when using RobShot's method, but I can see later that on the "getting the maximum from CCE" guide at Doom9, you mention 1 multipass is enough.
Is that true?
THis is important coz every multipass is 4 hours or so, so it's A DIFFERENCE!
Also, SiC mentioned somewhere he uses 9000 instead of 9800 after experiencing some "problems" with 9800. Is that true or did I just dream it? ;)
Thanks!

I think I wrote that you can get a small quality improvement by using more passes.. but this applies only to difficult scenes.. I'd hardly expect much visible gain on a drama for instance. And.. I pass only takes movielength/1.5 minutes here ;)
I still tend to believe that since we check dvd compliant we get a max bitrate of 9.8mbit/s hardcoded into the mpeg2 stream so that should work even with multiple audio streams and subs (tried it with 3 384kbit/s AC3 streams and two subtitle tracks and scenarist didn't bitch).. but if you run into problems you can try 9mbit/s and uncheck dvd compliant.

1 pass is definetly fine...my dvd's look perfect with a 1 pass...and then if i do a 3 pass...then look beyond perfect :)
so yea 1 pass is good

Well i can say about the DVD Compliant Button that it wont set up the max Bitrate to 9800.
I re-encoded the first time with CCE and used 9800 as max. Bitrate and, yes you know it, i was not able to add a audio stream with scenarist.
So i did it again. Seting the max. Bitrate lower (9300) and checked the DVD Compliant option in CCE. The result was that the max. Bitrate was not higher than 9300 (information from Bitrate Viewer). Up today i did several re-encodings and none of them had a max. Bitrate higher to them i set.

we get a max bitrate of 9.8mbit/s hardcoded into the mpeg2 stream so that
I didn't say it encodes at 9.8mbit... but that bitrate is hardcoded in the GOPs (check the CCE manual for more details).. the actual bitrate can still fluctuabe and there's no way to get a perfectly accurate cutoff point
