I can play my encoded divx 3.11 and 4.12 one pass without any problems
(512x384). When I encode to 4.12 two pass (same resolution, zero post processing level) it doesn't play smooth. I always encode stuff on my second HDD (60MB 7200 RPM).
My system:
Athlon 1.2 GHz (133 MHz), 384 MB, HDD WD 60 MB 7200 RPM. video: Asus 3800 TNT2, 32 MB. Win98SE.
Suggestions ???

IDE bus transfer speed will be limited by the slowest device on the bus. If your 2nd disk drive is on the same IDE bus as a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM, this could be the reason for your performance problem.
The common recommendation I've seen, here, is to put your hard-drives on the same bus.
I would hazard the guess that your difficulty is overall bitrate, not 1-pass vs 2.
Of course, I could be completely off-base.

Both HDD's are on the same IDE bus. The slowest one on the first slot and the fastest one on the second slot.

I also guess it's either a problem of 1.) higher bitrate, 2.) higher resolution or 3.) both. I can't imagine 2-pass encoded files could be any harder to play than 1-pass encoded files

Sorry for the late response. But it wasn't a bitrate/resolution problem. The problem was that the "frame dropping" is always 100% after installing, and I couldn't figure out that you can only change it if you select the second pass. I put it on 0% and I have no problems when playing back.
