View Full Version : Jerky SVCD despite all the usual "fixes"

I encoded Perfect Murder (NTSC, film99%, progressive, zig-zag, top field NO) after frameserving through DVD2AVI using force film. In CCE 2.62, I checked progressive and zig-zag, and unchecked top field first. I used pulldown on the *.m2v in order to play back on my DVD player (Apex 1500) and find that it is very jerky (but not in WMP). So, I used pulldown to change the field order and it's no better. Then I checked in bitrate viewer and found that my original *.m2v file from CCE had top field first even though I had unchecked this box (I looked again in CCE to see that it remained unchecked and it had). It seems that CCE did top field first anyway. Using pulldown to change the field order to the correct setting (bottom field first) did not correct the problem, even though bitrate viewer verified that the field order had been changed.

Are there other causes of this kind of jerkiness? I searched and found lots of threads on this subject but most dealt with this field order question.

I found a thread talking about checking the field order on a *.vob file other than the first one in the series because trailers and intro scenes might be different to the movie. Of the 4 vobs, the 1st and 4th showed top field first NO in bitrate viewer and the 2nd and 3rd showed top field first YES. This could cause problems. I split the 1st vob in vobsplit to exclude the first 30secs or so (which included the Warner Bros intro) and bitrate tells me it is now top field first YES. This mixing around of field order could play havoc with my encoding.

Anyway, I re-encoded the segment I had been using (well into the movie) now with top field first YES and all is well. I still don't understand why I could not correct the jerkiness by reversing the field order in pulldown.
