DVD Ripping and Encoding in Linux

Has anybody tried any dvd ripping/encoding tools made for linux, or use a windoze emulator to do it? If so can u tell me what tools u used, emulator, and how the end results where.

transcode is a command line encoder, but if you look on the website you'll find a link to download a GUI which can handle ripping/encoding for you.

player: xine

xine is a good video player for linux, in my opinion, plays divx files, mpeg, etc, including some more obscure formats.

i've tried running xmpeg and flask by way of wine, never had much luck myself. basically i'd suggest giving the transcode homepage a good looking over, lots of info there to get you started, and in my opinion it's probably the best route to take if you want to encode/rip in linux. hope this helps.

Yes, I believe so, it may take a bit of tweaking of a config file or a plugin though.

i don't believe so, but you may want to ask the developers at the xine site on that one.

also there are many other video players for linux, i just perfer xine, there's also mplayer, oms, aviplay, etc, etc.

I prefer watching my movies with mplayer.
I still do the encoding in windows though...

Yeah mplayer's not bad, i have some sync issues with sound on certains divx movies though. might be related to the fact that i used an unsupported version of gcc to compile it with.

anyway it's probably worth mentioning that when mplayer is compiled you also get mencoder, which is capable of encoding divx/mp3 movies just like transcode. and personally i thought it was a bit easier to get working than transcode. also mencoder supports xvid and a bunch of other codecs. so might be another route to look into for all you guys searching for linux alternative dvd encoders.
