This is not normal: 2 progressive frames + 4 interlaced frames. This is not the normal telecining pattern, I've never seen something like this. The normal telecining pattern is 3 progressive frames + 2 interlaced frames.

I think, this video is not telecined, so using IVTC tools won't help I guess. It's some kind of real frame rate conversion, I think you better just deinterlace this crap.

Hi GraigBee-

I posted over at Ars after downloading and working on the thing. I originally thought it was PAL converted to NTSC, but I like your theory of Film->PAL->NTSC better, as posted in the other thread. This one also has a 6 frame pattern with 2 good, 2 single ghosted, and 2 double ghosted frames. I experimented with both dropping 1 out of 5 and 1 out of 6 frames, but both ways produced jerky results. The only way I could get it smooth was by either just deinterlacing, or using Decomb's Mode=1 and keeping it at 30fps. Lots of blurring either way, though. The thing is a mess. Unfortunately, the guy didn't pick the best scene to pass on, as much of it is very dark, and the motion in most of the rest is far away, so it's hard to understand what's going on.

I still have the 19 MB vob on my hard drive if you (or anyone else)would like to have a look at it. You can PM me, and we can make arrangements.

This is horrible! I've been looking at it for several hours now. I enjoyed the opportunity and challenge of looking at this video. Some of the things I've examined:

I pulled the fields out and looked at the 'a' and 'b' fields seperately. I even tried decimating each field seperately and then reconstructing.

I tried Telecide and 1 in 6 decimate as was successful in Jason and the Argonauts (2000).

In the end, the best results were using VirtualDub's SmartDeinterlacer with "Field-only Differencing", "Compare color channels", "Use cubic for interpolation", and "Motion map denoising". While this isn't perfect, it does give good results in the high motion areas, and a great picture where there is no motion.

The best I can make of this, is that it looks VERY similar to VidCam caps that pirates make by sneaking a video camera into the theater. It appears they played the film, and just captured it with a NTSC video camera and then digitized it to DVD. It seems some DVD's are not meant to be played on progressive monitors.

I really wish I could be of more help, but they really mangled the video when they put it on DVD.
