I have my doubts about the two pass mode.

I always name my files 1stpass.avi & 2ndpass.avi (using virtualdub)

today I accidentally started a 2nd pass without first creating a first pass, the damn thing just started, without any problem or error message? How is this possible? Is DivX5 (pro GAIN) not really using a two pass mode, since I don't get any error messages whatsoever? What seems to be the matter?! I seem to recall getting error messages when I tried to do that before? Might this have something to do with the fact that I now use fast recompress instead of full processing mode?!

Also the video tab in the status window doesn't give me any video frame sizes either...

Anyway, if it's just me being stupid please tell me so but also mention what is really going on here, I'm on this board to learn...

Maybe it's just using a log file from a previous movie that you didn't delete. If you don't delete it, it'll stay there and DivX will use it.

Hi,

Check your compression settings...unless you have checked "protect file" for your log file, divx5 will use the default file. Works fine when you are encoding 1st pass, then immediately 2nd.

I checked it: when there is no log file, you get an error message and the encoding doesn't start.

Hi,

Of course there will be an error if there is no log file....however, if you are using the generic log file (divx.log or whatever it is), then the log file is not deleted when you are done encoding.

So the log file from the last 2-pass he did is still there, and the codec is using that log file to start the 2-pass, even though it's the wrong one.

Hi,

If you use the same name in all cases for your log file, yes whenever you do a new 1st pass of a new movie the log file is replaced.
