Problem with Subtitles

Hi,

I was trying to rip Highlander Endgame with dutch subtitles on the second subtrack. After pressing the "GO" button the subtitle screen popups. Now there are 3 rows with 1. Dutch subtitles and the other 2 are unspecified. The first dutch subtitle doesn't show an example. So i have to choose "Show next". I can do this 100 times, but no example shows up for the first row. Even if i press that Show next button 2 much dvd2svcd will give an unexpected error.

The other 2 rows show in the colum "language" unspecified. So if i choose on of these the subtitles won't work.

This is the 2nd time i get this so i wanna ask if anybody had this before too and can this be solved or am i doing something wrong here?

Are you trying to rip from the DVD or have you already ripped your DVD onto HD? This happened to me when I was trying to rip Simpsons DVD: I ripped the DVDs 1 episode at a time, however DVD2SVCD couldn't read the .ifo files generated by smartripper correctly. When I tried to rip straight from the DVD everything worked OK.

I'm having the same problem with a R2 Japanese disc. I tried two different builds of dvd2svcd. It's just this one disc (Gemini). I also used smartripper, just to see if the subs showed up in the ifo file, and they do. But dvd2svcd doesn't see this particular stream (0x20 english). Has anyone else had this problem, and fixed it?

Also tried with dvdx, same freeze problem...on this disc. I've since ripped two other R2 discs, dvd2svcd, worked great.

Lizzo: If smartripper sees the sub streams, could you just rip the whole DVD first onto HD and rip the subtitles with subrip 097b? (it can also rip Philips SVCD subs, but the sub timing is a bit different when done this way)

If I do this, is there a way to add that sub script to dvd2svcd? I've not had any success with other subtitle methods (tried the virtual dub frameserve and the dvd2avi/tmp method).

If someone could point in the direction of a guide, that would be great.

Are you trying to make SVCD (selectable) subs or permanent subs. When I wrote about the Philips SVCD style subs I assumed you're trying to do SVCD subs. These can be added with submux to the stream after DVD2SVCD has finished it's job (without subs).

I have done some VCDs with subs by using VirtualDub frameserving, but can't remember the details ... sorry.

Well, I not only made permanent subbed VCDs but mpeg-1 movies onto iPAQ.

To do that you'll need
1. To rip and OCR the subs with subrip. Sub file is a text containnig your original bitmaps.
2. Here is the point where you can translate English text to Spanish. Just use notepad to do that.
3. Convert the sub file format and optionally modify the appearance (color position, wrapping algorithm, etc.) of the subs to ssa format using SRTtoSSA
4. Install virtualdub and it's subtitle plug-in (subtiler.vdf - downloade it from www.virtualdub.com or any vdub site)
5. Open the input avi file. That can be a frameserved stream from vobs using dvd2avi, flask, etc. or even a divx-ed avi as well.
6. Configure the subtitler plug-in (Video add plug-in...). User preview to check if that's working. This step will add the permanent subs to your video.
7. Now, enable File->Frameserver to further frameserve the subbed stream to you mpeg encoder. I tipically used TMPENC for this, but CCE will work as well. Just open a VCD or any other template and press Encode.
8., Since the output of this process is an MPEG file depending upon the template you used, dvd2svcd has no role. For creating a VCD you'll need VCDEasy or TSCV.

The only problem I found was that the subtitler plug-in did not support Latin-2 special accented Hungarian characters, but I believe you'll have no problems.

Well, I only tried using permanent subs, as I am sharing, and trying to make it as share-able as possible. I may try with svcd subs, and see if it works.
