Ripping Hangs on certain movies?

I have looked at the FAQ and searched the forums already without finding an answer; So, I figure it is time to post my question.

I have converted several DVD's to SVCD without any problems using the default DVD2SVCD setup. There are currently 2 DVD's that I have tried to convert that are doing the exact same thing to me. The ripping starts and the blue progress bar moves 2 spots at about 500KB or so then the blue bar stops moving and the speed drops and drops. I have left it going for over 24 hours before and the speed was -48k when I stopped it. Again, this is the ripping part, not the encoding part. The 2 movies are Braveheart and Independence Day. I even tried Braveheart on my normal PC and my laptop with the exact same results. Does anyone have any ideas?
I am running Windows XP Pro
P-III 733
512Meg Ram
DVD and HD on seperate IDE channels
I have tried DMA turned on and off
SVCD2DVD version: 1.0.6 build 4
no other programs running in the background (services are very limited)
I have not installed the ASPI layer yet, but I am going to try that now as that is the only thing I have seen on these forums that seems to be even close to a solution.

Well, I installed the ASPI layer and tried Independence Day again and it ripped without a problem, so it looks like I found the solution. I will try Braveheart again soon.

Due to the policy change requiring 3 days before posting taking place right after I posted this question, I was not able to update it until now.
Anyway, the ASPI layer did not fix the problem afterall. However upgrading to DVD2SVCD 1.0.7 build 4 did.

Glad you figured that out, also sometimes you'll need to run the movie in Power DVD or some other software dvd player before you start the ripping process.

I have been running it in PowerDVD (about the first minute) before I start ripping. I saw that in the FAQ early on [see, some people do read the FAQ :) ]

i found that running the first min does not always work because of the multiple vob files so what i do is let it play 5 seconds then move to next dvd chapter then again till at the end... of in powerdvd i just click about 10 times down the slider bar so it plays different parts trying to amke it open all the vob files...

i had one that was horrible one time and this helped!

Thanks for the tip. I will try that next time I have a ripping problem. I wonder if that would have fixed my problem last time.
