View Full Version : Couple of problems with MaestroSBT

Let's see...
I'm using SubRip 0.97b to extract subtitles to Hunt For Red October PAL Zone2 for later author on DVDMaestro. This DVD has 2 spanish subtitle tracks. One of the two are just the russian speach in spanish (I guess the other one is the whole movie subtitled).
Now I end with a SRT file.
I understand I now need to SBAdjust it, but I end with a file with NO '|'s so when I launch MaestroSBT, I'm loosing the original carriage returns of the original movie.
Moreover, on MaestroSBT I tell styles to be white over black and I end with (BMPS are) red over white?
Original SRT output:
00:14:07,240 --> 00:14:14,271
- ¿Qué hace usted?
- Debo comprobar el comportamiento
de la dotación.
SBAdjusted file (SSA output)
Dialogue: Marked=0,0:14:07.24,0:14:14.27,*Default,15,0000,0000,0000,,- ¿Qué hace usted? - Debo comprobar el comportamiento de la dotación.
Am I not supposed to get a '|' before the second '-' and another one right after 'comportamiento'?
Finally, resulting BMP attached:

Well, attachment does not show up, but as I said, it's a serie of red over white BMPs.
Any wrong setting??

The problem you're having comes from the SRT-->SSA conversion. It's supposed to insert \n or \N where new lines are needed (you must change later the \n to \N for MaestroSBT to use them).
For that task I use srt2ssa, a small tool in doom9's main software page. As it saves SSA v2 format, I open it with SSA (Sub Station Alpha) and then re-save, so it's SSA v4 now.
Hope this helps...
Guille
PS: I plan to add SRT import to MaestroSBT in the not-so-immediate future...

Couldn't locate srt2ssa in software page...
Which is the latest version of it?

No... you are right. Sorry... I got confused. I believe that subrip can save in SSA v2 format. Try that, and don't forget the v2-->v4 format conversion using Sub Station Alpha, or MaestroSBT will have some problems on saving.

AFAIK SubRip only saves in SUBRIP or ASCII formats.
What's the substation alpha step about??

At this point I may seem quite stupid, as I gave you two wrong directions. Sorry for that. Here are the good ones, since this time I checked.
1) Download srt2ssa from divx-digest (http://www.divx-digest.com/software/srt2ssa.html).
2) Unzip it to a new folder and open your .srt file with it.
3) Ensure you mark "Lines cutting->same as the original".
4) Convert.
5) Download and install Sub Station Alpha (http://www.eswat.demon.co.uk/substation.html) (the father of the SSA format).
6) Open the .SSA file you got with srt2ssa.
7) Save it (F2).
That converts the script from SSA v2 to SSA v4.
Now you can use it in MaestroSBT. I know, I know... it would be much easier if MaestroSBT could open .SRT files directly. I promise it will, one day... but not for the moment.

Hi!
Looks like I managed to follow all your steps.
However, after importing the SON file from MaestroSBT to DVDMaestro, and while trying to preview it, DVDMaestro crashes with a GPF.
Can you tell me about the settings in MaestroSBT for PAL movies?
In rendering, I chose PAL 720 resolution, checked the Full width, leave Minus2 checked, leave Dont clip bitmaps unchecked, and remove the Sticky colors option. Timing set to 25fps.
Ideas??
ThankS!

Mmmm... may be it's your version of DVD Maestro. I heard that some versions crash when importing subtitles (search here in this forum on this). You could also try different output formats in MaestroSBT (8-bit compressed, 8-bit uncompressed, etc.) to see if that's the cause.

I thought I had the latest version available ever, 2.9.2915a
I'll try other compression then.

Looks like 8 bit with no compression works fine, however subtitles appear totally dark.
I wonder if i missed any switch or how should i make so subtitles are white with a thin black outline. Current outline is very big.
Thanks!

AAAAAAAARGH!
What's that?!?!? ;)
Stepbystep plz, we're about to finish! ;)
Shall I leave sticky colors enabled or disabled?

Sticky colors has nothing to do with that ;)
With the .SON and .BMP files, you also got a .SPF file. Open one of the subtitles within DVD Maestro (as if you were about to edit it), go to the colors tab and click on "edit palette", then load the SPF file into the palette.

PS: BTW, sticky colors are used in such cases in which you have several subtitles of different colors colliding in the screen (sharing the same subpicture) and you must sacrifice colors on some of them due to the 3 (4) color limit of the DVD format. Don't worry about it, but I would leave it checked. The difference is only aesthetic.

Yahoooo!
Finally!
Woah, it lasted a while!
It's amazing the amount of steps to achieve this, hehehee ;)
I'd suggest an append or edit the Doom9 guide about this, what a headache! ;)
Well, next time u visit Spain, u deserve a beer, amigo ;)
Thanks!
