Hi
how can i create OGG/Vorbis Audio Stream with ABR ?
OGGMachine doesnt have an option to switch to CBR,ABR or VBR and headac3he tells me to not encode OGG audio stream with ABR and crashes if i use it anyway.

Whenever you set bitrate configuration in OggMachine, it will go ABR.
if you only set the quality parameter, you'll get VBR.

@DSPGuru:
I thought the vorbis encoder RC3 didn't support ABR yet? Am I wrong about this or are you using a custom modified build for OggMachine?

Vorbis has always had ABR. There is no such thing as CBR in Vorbis. You have the quality modes which are true VBR. And then you can set the min, nom, and max bitrate. If the min=nom=max you will not get CBR. It will instead be ABR.
The quality modes are the best to use. Though you can do a more tuned VBR by setting the bitrates manually the results are often not as good as the q-modes. And the ABR would only be really nescessary for something like a streaming aplication. For videos and audio off the HD the quality modes do the best job.

That's absoulutly right.
Please note that since RC3 ABR modes are limited to 44100khz. That's the reason for the crashs (I suppose you tried 48000khz streams, isn't it?) Anyway as already outlined forget the ABR modes if you are not streaming.
Best regards,
Tobias
PS: In RC4 ABR will be back for non 44100khz, as far as I know

Ok.
What program is the best to use (and what settings are to do) if i want an OGG Stream ABR 160kbp, 48khz ? And do i have to set MIN=128 NOM=160 MAX=320 if i want 160 ABR ?

As I already told: currently ABR DOES NOT WORK WITH 48khz. THIS IS A LIMITATION BY THE LIBRARY AN NOT THE APPLICATION. IF YOU WANT TO USE ABR WITH OTHER THAN 44.1KHZ YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR RC4.

I use Easy CDDA Extractor to encode into ogg vorbis audio. I think i was able to get 48 using this sw.
Would I get better quality if I were to use HeadAC3he instead?

I was just wondering. I saw a rip of 'The Others' around which was with ABR 48khz OGG
Audio Codec.: (OGG )
Audio Format: (192kbps ABR,48kHz )
so i thought this would be possible...

it was with RC2 ...

It's highly advised that you use VBR Q(quality) modes within Vorbis RC3 right now. VBR is capable of both 44kHz and 48kHz. As Tobias stated the Vorvis devs will concentrating more on ABR when RC4 is released. Nobody is clear when RC4 will be released ATM, in fact we may not see it and instead see RC5
Now enough of the ABR and resample chat here:D Hope it's all cleared up for the 2nd or 3rd time in this thread. If you want to investigate anything other than VBR Quality modes(advised) then visit the Vorbis homepage (http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/index.html)

ok i will use VBR then till ABR is supported.
i often read that Ogg at 128 is same like MP3 in higher bitrates. so i want to use 160kbps because its a good movie. does it mean i can encode it in ogg with 128 and its nearly same quality than 160 in mp3, maybe better ?

mrbungle,
I don't think it's fair to say Vorbis 128kbps = MP3(LAME) 160kbps. It's totally dependant on your source. Each codec has it's strength and weakness.
Remember, you keep saying Ogg, Ogg is just a container and nothing more. Vorbis is the audio compression. Another thing, try not to think of Vorbis in terms of bitrate but think of Q(quality) levels that OggMachine and HeadAC3he use. You should basically forget everything you know about MP3 and don't try to apply those terms to Vorbis.
Why don't you do a short listening test at q1, q2, q3, q4.99 and then q5? After that do something similar with MP3 and then compare quality for your ears. IMO q2 sounds slightly better than a 128kbps LAME MP3 and of course the Vorbis q2 file will be smaller.

i make my 1cd movies with about 80 kbit vorbis. (of course quality mode, why should vorbis waste space for quietness due to CBR or ABR boundaries?)
and i save my music in ~130 kbit vorbis... imho 160 kbit is too much for a movie, but the picture qality is never good enough. so i suggest not using higher bitrates then 110 kbit... but it's up to you.
and of course it's for 2 channel audio... dont forget that ac3 uses 348 kbit or something like that for 5.1 channels. if the new channel coupling code gets into the new vorbis realease then i would not use more then 192 kbit for an 5.1 vorbis audio, but it needs testing and i'm not an audiophil either.
