I'm having some trouble with interlace modes. For encoding I can choose between upper field first or lower field first. I think I should choose the same method like in the source material.
Can anybody tell me how to find out in which interlace mode the source-movie is coded.

Use Bitrate Viewer, it will tell you that among other interesting things. Unfortunately I don't remember the URL right now, but Mr. Google will help you.

Sorry, Bitrate Viewer isn't what I'm searching for.
I need a tool that can tell me what field order the interlaced frames of the source material (VOBs) have.

Bitrate viewer will do that. See Robshot's method step 2 -- it will tell you whether it is interlaced or progressive, whether it is top field first, and the scan method in use...
