Time errors and Audio/Video distortion

Ripped several discs (The Others R3, Moulin Rouge R2 and Erin Brokovich R2) without success.

The muxed Mpeg files play fine through Windows Media Player. However when burned, they only play fine up to the forty minute mark. After that there is unwatchable degrees of audio and video distortion. This is regardless of whether I use CDRWIN, Nero, "Foolproof Method" or use Nero's SVCD feature to burn from the MPEG.

When played using WinDVD the time bar gets things wrong. If you drag it to the right hand end it reckons on a video length of about 1 hour 20 mins per disc, although these movies are all in the order of 2 hours and the bitrate set to burn anything under 130 mins onto two discs. ie they should have 1hr (ish) on each disc.

When you put the SVCD in the DVDROM drive the system freezes when the distortion kicks in. My Wharfedale M5 standalone DVD player also freezes and has to be powered down at the mains. Using DAEMON tools virtual drive the time error still occurs but the dragging the time bar along you can play any section of the movie without distortion.

So, Nitty Gritty...
System: PC Chips 810LMR motherboard, Athlon XP1600+, 256MB SDRAM, Onboard Intel 810 Graphics and SiS sound, NEC5800A DVDROM drive flashed with multiregion firmware, Yamaha CRW4416S SCSI CDRW on Adaptec DC390U SCSI adapter (Later replaced with Sony CRX160E IDE to see if that helped. It didn't.).

Windows 98SE, DVD2SVCD 1.07B4, CDRWin 3.8F and Nero 5.5.1.4 both installed, WinDVD2000 Software.

Rip with internal routines (tried vstrip - no luck) Audio @ 224, no downsample, Video set so anything up to 130 mins goes to 2 80min discs. Max bitrate 2490, min 300, Min Average box unchecked. Encode using CCE-SP 2.50 with Resample Audio. No title pic, ChangeCD pic on except last disc.

Had a play with audio and video bitrates without luck (I refuse on principle to let Audio go below 160 - that sounds quite bad enough! However, if it would help...)

So basically I've tried everything I can think of right down to buying a new writer! Forum search found no matches, so I wonder if anyone else has had similar problems and if so, how they solved them. It isn't that I haven't tried, just that I haven't succeded so I felt the time was right to post here.

Try a burn at the slowest speed your burner supports or 4X whichever is greater. It really sounds like a burning or media issue.
If slowing the burn down does not work try different media and as a last resort if you have access try a different burner.

As for the wrong time. That seems to happen often and is common. I don't remember any fix for that.

I had this problem about 4 weeks ago with jurassic park 3.
same video & audio distortion at around 45mins on my pioneer after burning at 12 speed (no problems before or since).

I burned it again at 4X & it was fine.

I gave the other copy to a friend to try, he had no problems with it. :mad:

you didnt say what your Max avg bitrate was set at.
I suspect it has something to do with the total max bitrate & the media used & your player(hence burning it slower).
the reason I say this is that I know I pushed this movie to the max over 3 90 min disks because I wasnt happy with the mosquito noise in some of the scenes even using 4 pass VBR.

Found an old Philips disc in the back of my cupboard. Burned to it as a search of the forum found someone saying the old Philips were good media.

Worked perfectly.

However, DataSafe Media, All4Mats and Maxell discs did not.

So if you're getting image files which play through WinDVD (or whichever) via Daemon tools vitual DVDROM but burning coffee coasters I suggest a change of media.

Just bought some Imation 32x - these work perfectly too, even burning @ 10x speed!
