View Full Version : Large, blurry blocks at moving edges

I encoded in CCE VBR 3-pass, max 4000, min 1500, average 2885, an NTSC, 29.97fps, progressive DVD. I used bitrate viewer to get the field order. In CCE I used linear quant., zig-zag encoding, progressive-off, quality 10, DCT 10, anti-noise 2, MPEG standard matrices. I multiplex in bbMPEG using the MPEG 2 program stream not the SVCD stream (as is non-standard). The result looks beautiful on my PC but when I burn it (VCD Easy or Nero) large, blurred, blockiness appears at the edges of moving figures. It has an almost shimmering, mirage-like look at the edge. The slow action or still scenes look great. I use an Apex-1500 player. I thought I might have exceeded its bitrate sampling max. so I reduced the max to 3000, with the same result. Then I tried a CBR of 3000, thinking maybe the player couldn't handle VBR with the same result.

It has me stumped. It is not the usual blockiness that comes with low bitrates and because it is not there on my PC it seems to be dependent upon the SVCD creation, the player, or that it is on the TV and not the monitor. Any ideas?

I should add that this problem does not occur when using TMPGEnc to produce a CQ-VBR 1500-3500 non-standard SVCD. Since first posting, I have tried CCE again with different settings. Making it progressive rather than interlaced, or deselecting linear quant and zigzag, made no difference.

I think I have found the answer. DVD2AVI preview tells me my NTSC DVD is 99%film. I made another *.d2v using force-film, encoded in CCE as usual, then ran pulldown on the *.m2v. After re-muxing in bbMPEG, I find the edge artefact has gone. Still don't know why TMPGEnc encoding did not cause this problem, especially as I did not use any 3:2 pulldown.
