View Full Version : inaccurate file size projection

hey people. i had this file that was out of sync sometimes and sometimes not. so i came to the conclusion that it was cause the resolution was too high for my pc to handle, so i loaded the avi in nandub, set audio to direct stream, video to full processing, then i went and set the resize filter to a lower resolution. then i went and calculated the bitrate and saved the avi. it took about 4 hours to go through the movie and the output file plays 100% in sync but the output file also turned out to be about 150 MB smaller than what i projected. so i opened up nandub again and loaded the original avi that had too high of a resolution but this time i didn't set a resize filter or anything before calculating the bitrate. sure enough, it gave me the same bitrate as before when i did have a resize filter set. so the problem is that nandub didn't factor in the resize filter when calculating which resulted in the resized movie being crappier quality than it could have been. is this cause i saved the avi instead of doing a 2 pass? i'm confused, when you save an avi, is there no encoding going on?? if not, then why will it let me apply filters such as resizing??

thanks

I think the solution is simple, and two outcomes may happen after reading my post:
1. Kick yourself in the ass or,
2. Explain to me, that I misread your question, in which case you will have to clarify your question further..or simplify it

If you set your bitrate and go to save as avi..., and save your avi right off the bat, it saves a 1 pass vbr avi, which as you may or may not know that is a silly thing to save. That would explain the 150mb's less in file size, because.. it just didn't need as many bits at a smaller resolution. In order to utilize nandubs capabilities it has to encode the video twice.

Now...if what I said is new to you...which I hope that encoding the video twice in nandub isn't... then you have a much bigger problem than just running it twice. If that is true, then you most likely did not set up very good options for nandub. If you did set up good options, and just left that out of your problem statment then pay no attention and go to the next paragraph now :). You will have to learn what the options in nandub do and the best place for that is koepi's site here: http://mitglied.lycos.de/koepi/nandub_options_explained.html.

So here is your solution:
1. Load your avi, set your resize filter, and your bitrate/nandub options
2. Goto file>two passes>and pick a name for your .stats file and your new avi. and press ok.

This will prepare a .stats file so that nandub, during the second time it encodes the video, can take advantage of all the bits you told it too, if you don't understand what I just said, pleas ejust post again with more questions and I'm sure other people and I would be more than happy to help you out more.
