What is better, what is worse??? What do you think?
First define exactly what you mean by "better" and "worse".

better=good picture Quality at a small size(e.g 700MB/2h video+audio)
worse=bad picture Quality at a small size(e.g 700MB/2h video+audio)

Could we please stop all these useless "which is better" threads?
A few well-chosen search commands will tell you all arguments for and against each codec. After you have searched and are still not satisfied, try them all out yourself and figure out which YOU think is better.
Quality is subjective and different for all of us.

Hi,
I personally get better results with DivX 5.0 Pro......Xvid is too blocky for me.

I am strung out between the both. I have been getting some nice results with Divx5, but Xvid still does a good job as well. ATM Xvid is lacking a bit because of B frames. But I hear rumors of progress on that front.

I have to agree with dragoman. XviD is blockier, mainly in fade in/out and dark scenes. And it has some ringing artifacts that I don't see in DivX5 (Pro). But it's not fare to campare them untill XviD will have B-frames too. Then will see.

XviD ofcourse...
How do you people see the future of DivX 5????
We have messed up playback of other codecs, spyware, not free for personal use..... What's next?
At higher bitrates which you wanna use anyway for anything serious all these codecs are really close and getting closer.
So better choose the codec(s) that do not support this stupid media war and use very lame marketing strategies.
XviD is the BIG WINNER!!!!

We have messed up playback of other codecs, spyware, not free for personal use..
If you know what you are doing you can fix these problems....they are not built into the codec as you are claiming, but seperate issues...
Also, Xvid has it's own issues as well.
When I encode a video, I don't care about anything but quality in the video being encoded. I use the codec that looks the best, period.
Xvid (in my own personal opinion and experience) does not have the performance that DivX5Pro does. The picture is blocky, the playback is spotty, and the encoding speed is equal to (or slower) than DivX 5.
For me, DivX 5 Pro is the best codec to use because it produces the best quality. The fact that it includes spyware in the free version (which is easily disabled in about 2 min) is irrelevant. If you are too cheap to buy it (I did), then 2 min to take care of the spyware is not too much to ask.
As for playback of other codecs, the only problem I've heard of is DivX 3.11, which is also easily fixed. And the problem is not universal (I've never had a problem).
Not free for personal use? Not sure what you are referring to here....please explain. As far as I know, DivX 5 is free to use, and DivX 5 Pro the same after paying the 30 bucks or getting the spyware version.

DivX5 TO ME appears more blockier during high motion scenes as opposed to Xvid. However, DivX5 TO ME does look slightly better in low motion scenes.
Since I notice less detail during high motion I don't really mind its blockiness.
However, you might have to do several encodes if you are using divX5 just to get the size right. I am still amazed at how Xvid is still able to compete with DivX5 even though it does not have B frames yet.
To me, DivX5 won't have a future when Xvid debuts with B-frames.
Although I am STILL experiencing bleaching/bleeding with Xvid's decoder.
NB: Oh, and these observations were taken with postprocessing turned off.
Just my opinion

Once again I have to agree with dragoman. Quality is the only thing that matters. And since I'm doing only 1 CD rips the difference is even more obvious and the winner is DivX5. As for paying for it, well, if you want the best you'll probably never get it for free, but the spyware is a small price to pay, unless you find 30 bucks cheaper :).

Looks http://www.nixed-hq.com and press "codecs compare" or directly from http://koti.mbnet.fi/website/mpeg4test/.
DivX 5 is better, but i must say that when XviD come Bi-frame and Qpel options i think that XviD can be very good. But now XviD is not as good than DivX 5.

I encode anime and the results for DivX5: not crap but not good
In single words(for me): XviD Rulez the World

i encode anime too and all codecs produce worse results than divx3.

IMO DivX5 looks better then DivX 3.x & 4.x
I got around to encoding Swordfish last week (699mb) and was happy with the results. I will post an image of 3 scenes which i quickly grabbed. I know images are not a good way of telling if a film looks good during playback, but what the hell. :)
The scenes are a wee bit grainy. This is my first DivX5 encode, so my next might not turn out so well.

well, I'm using divx5 but only cause xvid gave me always a movie with a big touch of green. I couldnt see any difference in the quality and I am not sitting in front of my PC or TV (=> tv-out :D )and watch "is that picture a little bit better than the other"!

@Captain_Nipple:
Don't attach images just to show everyone they look good. Images for comparing are ok, images to show what problem you have are ok too. Attaching 1.5MB worth of pictures will slow down loading this thread for other users.

I don't mind which codec you guys use to encode anime, just keep them coming. Fansubbers keep subbing. Timers keep timing.
Lipton's or Wild monks anime encodes are alright,
but some guys encode a 25min clip into about 230megs and then boast that it is good.
Of course it would be, at such a high bitrate.
I believe that if they used DivX5 or even Xvid they would get better quality at a lower bitrate...which would save so much bandwidth.
But i must admit that divX5 doesn't encode cartoons as well as it does for motion pictures.

I'm encoding Ninja Scroll (anime) at the moment using divx5 for the first time as Doom put up his guide on the 29th. I've been using Xvid for Anime and I've been very happy with the quality so It's going to take alot to convince me to change.
I'll post my opinion after i finish encoding with both codecs.

For the divX5 encode, could you try it with both gmc on and off.
I found that when gmc is on i would get a frosty effect.

Everybody who are buying into these X vs. Y threads should sacrifice the time to try out the codecs on their own and find their own truth rather than just buy into some of the rather hefty generalizations I see here.

You can't be too critical of people that want an easy answer, After all some people do have the time or the patients to try everything for themselves. I read these kinds of threads to guage what other people's opinions are (as I'm sure thats what most of the people that read these topics do) not to take everyone else's opinion at face value.
But the simple truth is there is no clearcut answer just as there was no clearcut answer for the divx3-4 debate sometime back.
Edit: kastro68 I'm encoding with GMC on for now but if i get the same effect i'll let you know.
When calculating the bitrate should i assume that 1kbit = 1000bits like divx4 or 1024bits like divx3?

Ans: The former.

Believe me, I have did very rigorous and extensive comparisons. It just feels more assuring when someone else gets the same results. In order to know someone else's results we must put forth our opinion.
Edit: @deptmaster
The frosty effect I am talking about only occurs every now and then, it is like having fog on the inside of your monitor. Usually it does not affect the whole frame, but just parts of it, especially where there is some movement.

Well in my case divx5 won. I set both codecs for 2 pass encoding and came out with to almost equal file sizes [620mb] for 88 minute video. B-frames must be really doing something good for the divx codec because I noticed sharper lines and less blocking in both high and low motion. So it looks like i might have to switch sides atleast for the time being.
kastro68 I think i see what you're talking about the frosting effect it very subtle and extremely hard to spot unless you examine the individual frames. I'm going to try this movie one more time with GMC off.

Well apparently the frosty effect i thought i saw was just slight noise coming threw from the dvd and i couldn't identify the effect you mentioned. GMC turned on produced a cleaner picture for this test and the overall quality fell when i turned it off.

hmm,.. I go for Xvid.
To me it seams DivX5 is the way (atm) to go if u do a 1 CD Rip but Xvid if u go for 2 CDs or animes.

I totally aggree. I'm quite surprized with DivX5.
I hope b-frame support for Xvid works out well too. That will then be my chosen codec.

I did a test on Angelas Ashes (no reason for the movie choice...it was just next in line to be done and divx5 was just released). I thought divx5 was a bit better...but i only viewed it in a window (not fullscreen). But I still am going with xvid. When I think about it its kinda stupid...but i have never like divx4 or 5...i think my reasons are all political. The only reason why I would change is if divx hardware players come out and the cant play xvid...but then i am also screwed since i use ogg...and i dont know if that will be supported.
But then i think...i just bought an actual dvd player for the tv about a month ago...and most of the time i watch the dvds on my computer. Also using xvid and ogg is cool :D
