Why is Xvid Encoding at 0 fps?

Ok, you probably read the title and were wondering, "What's going on?!"

Well, that's what I am wondering. I don't even now what I did to cause this. But let me describe more...

Basically, I start encoding using Xvid, just like I always did before. I look at the status windows and here is what I see:

19fps...19fps...18fps...15fps...17fps...5fps...4fps...2fps...1fps...

and finally 0fps!!!!!!!

Then it begins to increase:

1fps...2fps...6fps...12fps...

And back down again?

4fps...3fps...6fps...

And back and forth and back and forth?

It took me 8 minutes to do a 1min 55sec clip!!!

Normally, I encode at 19+fps.

One thing may be important, I am encoding from a Huffyuv file in Fast Recompress mode.

Well, that's all I can think of that may be important to describe the situation.

Check all your background processes to make sure one of them isn't hogging the CPU time.

I guess that reading from and writing to your harddisk is very time consuming. You can tweak the performance settings in the "Options | Performance" dialog, trying smaller or bigger buffers (this changes how often a more or less big block is written or read); you shall check if you can enable UltraDMA mode in BIOS or by installing required drivers; it also shall help to edit the VCache settings - there are a few "optimisers" out there, but I wouldn't recommend a specific one (some say that CacheMan is great, I think it's a bit too comprehensive for only this job...)
