Will converting a movie to ntsc make it shorter???

hi. i just ripped saving private ryan and encoded it to Pal VCD using DVDx

Only probem is, it came out on three cd's, with only 5 minutes on the last. that's with the credits cut out.

i was thinking since Pal = 25fps and ntsc = 29fps, if i converted it to ntsc then will it be shorter?? so i can fit it on 2 cd's??

if so, can i do this with tmpeg?

when converting from pal to ntsc (29,97 fps) the file gets longer!
since you have app 5 Frames per second more. And don't forget to shorten the audiofile or make it longer when converting.
I would advise you to use DVD2SVCD...just check a box and it'll do the rest for you!;)

surely the more FPS the shorter the movie gets. in 1 sec, a pal movie will get throuhg 25 frames. in ntsc it will go through 29. so every second the ntsc shows 4 frames more. meaning it is shortend.

But wouln't it be easier to calculate the bitrate beforehand to avoid having a 3rd cd with 5 mins of the film leftover?

Don't VCD's have to have a fixed bitrate of 1150 video 224 audio? How would calculating the bitrate help?

yes you're right. i can't change the bitrate so if it's PAL then it's on 3 cd's. well,m i've already converted it to ntsc but unfortunately it didn't make any differenvce whatsoever on the length. i use tmpeg. should i use another program??

might want to try extracting the audio, and downsampling to 192k...that might make your file size small enough to fit 2 CD's

Well both PAL & NTSC takes the same BANDWIDTH... so the total size is the same. Anyways, the file size is defined by the bitrate not the fps or frame size, so the only way of making it shorter is lowering the bitrate.

About the frame rate conversion, yes you can lower the total movie time by speeding up fps count... but you'll need to shrink the audio as well so you won't loose sync when playing. This is not recommended by any means, though (a 20% shrink will higher the base frequency too much).

Why are you converting to 29.97 fps? You're just wasting unnecessary bandwidth. Instead, convert your movie to NTSC 23.976 fps. Use NTSC resolution, but cut the framerate down to 23.976. It's a valid VCD combination, and it will result in a better quality VCD.

well if i make it 23fps then it would make the film longer ad the only reason i'm doing this is to fit the movie on 2 cd's

Just make the sound 192k/s or something. Most VCD/DVD etc. players can play this. You could also try and lower the bitrate of the movie...but if your player doesnt like different sound bitrates it probably wont like a different video bitrate.
