can someone please explain what the advantages of the mpeg4 functionality of DivX5 pro are and what settings are useful to use ?

The .mp4 file should allow you to play your movie on a standalone DVD player. Maybe not now, but at least in the future.
The MPEG4 specs also have better implementation for B-frames than AVI has.

But what about the sound?
If we convert to .mp4 an avi that already has, lets say, a mp3 sound muxed in, will it play in the standalone dvd player, with sound and all?
That would be JUST GREAT!!! :)

Can't you also stream MP4 files? Since it's based on and fits with the actual mpeg specifications?

There are only a few audio formats supported in te MPEG4 specs. I can't remember which at the moment.
