i have a NTSC movie 4:3 @29.97 fps

in my dvdavi project it keeps swutching bewteen NTSC and film (which never goes above ~85%)in the video window. so i guess my question is simply what does this mean. do i turn of force film and inverse telicine or what?

thx in advace

Sometimes, the leaders are in different formats than the main content. Re-run your preview in dvd2avi, after setting the start position somewhere in the middle of your content with the [ button.

If the content is NTSC video, rather than film, clear Force FILM and save the project. De-interlace in GKnot if it's interlaced, but don't IVTC. (Force FILM is a quick and easy IVTC).

thx for the input and it does turn out still switching back and fourth throughout the entirity of the movie but its locked on progressive not interlaced.

sorry one more question...if you do decide to de-interlace or the ivtc option in gknot what do you leave the fps in the avi window? for example i made a d2v of a movie without forced film and wished to deinterlace would i leave it on 29 fps or switch to 23?

thx again in advance.

Hi-

I'm not sure what you mean by:

what do you leave the fps in the avi window?

But if you plan on just deinterlacing (not recommended if it has been telecined), then make your .d2v with Force Film (24fps). If you plan to IVTC, then make your .d2v without Force Film (30fps), and in the process of IVTCing, it will be converted to 24fps.

Understand now? Clear as mud?

I think what he's saying is that he doubts that one process will be the single answer for his problem. His movie is switching back and forth between FILM and NTSC.

I'm currently wrestling with The Godfather that does exactly the same thing only it's not just the headers that are different. It seems the movie is divided into thirds with the first being FILM, the middle being NTSC ~4%, and the end being FILM 94% or so.

How would one handle these sort of films?

Hi-

I just worked with something like that last night-Jay And Silent Bob. It worked its way up to 99% Film but in the second half as DVD2AVI was working its way through it, it became heavily NTSC, and eventually wound up about 40% NTSC. I was afraid there might be some 30fps stuff in it. But as I looked around it, it had all been telecined as near as I could tell. I IVTC'd it, and it turned out smooth as silk.

So open up the .d2v without Force Film (30fps) in GKnot, and look around different places where there's motion. If you see the pattern of 3 progressive (not interlaced) frames and two interlaced frames out of every five frames, it's been telecined, and you can IVTC. Force Film probably won't work well, but Decomb can handle it easily.
If all you see is non-stop interlacing, then all you can do is Deinterlace. If you find a mix of telecined and pure interlace, then Decomb's Mode=1 can handle it, although you will wind up with 30fps output.

Switching between NTSC and FILM by itself doesn't tell you much (except maybe that you can't just Force Film). You have to get in there and start looking at the frames.

Edit: I was reading what I wrote earlier, and if it is pure interlace, you'd be better off leaving it at 30fps and deinterlacing. Otherwise it'll wind up jerky.
