View Full Version : First semi-success. Need assistance with audio

I'm a newbie to be sure. I have read and searched but still would welcome assistance. A short history and info:

HP PIII 1G machine
256K ram
60G hard drive.

I downloaded DVD2SVCD (latest build plus patch) and CCE 2.50.1.0. Problems with CCE lockup at 40% to 75%. Tried CBR and had no lockups. However audio was half second delay. Tried VBR again with lockups. I then dumped all programs and loaded all programs again.

I had a completion with my first rip using VBR 3 pass. (I have attached the log file and will welcome recommendations for tweeking.)

However, the audio is still about half a second delayed. Any help at all would be very welcome. By the way, the movie is: A Knight's Tale. Three files were produced, I have only burned the first one using Fireburner.

As far as the audio sync - Assuming you are using the internal ripping routines, check the chapter drop down list in the conversion tab. Check and see if the first chapter starts with a 0 time. If so deselect it.

As far the cce fail at partial there are at least a hundred posts on that subject. None of them (including mine and DVD2SVCDs :) ) fix this problem. Also see the Q&A. Normally on these problem machines TMPG will work and deliver a competitive quality IF you use CQ mode.

Thank you so much for the reply DDog,

As I said, I'm a newbie... as a result, (at this time) I do not totally understand what using "internal ripping methods" mean unless it means I am letting the DVD2SVCD script and programs perform all the functions. I am letting DVD2SVCD do all the work.

I will see if I can do what you recommend and do the conversion process again, less the ripping from DVD.

I have read many posts about the hanging/locking problem and know there is no fix. However, after reloading all programs and doing a "pass 3", it worked. Maybe I was just lucky this time.

Thank you again. I'll report back my test to deselect track one if the start time is zero.

Look on the DVD Rip tab. One of the options is internal routines.
To do what DDogg suggests you will need to re-rip from the DVD.
Once you have checked Activate DVD ripping and selected internal routines when you laod the IFO into the conversion screen you can click on the time shown. A window will popup where you can select and deselect chapters. The length of each one is also shown. If the first chapter is 0 then unselect it and continue like you always did. One point make sure all of your settings are complete before checking the DVD chapters. If you leave the conversion tab and come back to it the chapters reset themselves. So do the chapter selection last or second to last since hitting GO is last.

Hi Markrb,
OK, thanks for painting a picture for me. I've always been on the umm.. duhh.. paint me a picture and I'll understand it better.

Now, I'm going to try this again and see how it goes.

I'm just stoked that the process has completed two times without CCE locking up. Knock on wood.. Even if the video/audio is out of sync.

I'm getting closer!!

Best regards,

Markrb, DDOG, .. or anyone that has made this booboo and knows how to correct..

I clicked the wrong selection in the audio tracks and processed with DVD2SVCD. (nstead of clicking on the time than chapters) dooh!

The result looks and plays good on the mpg player in windows but I need to change the track. I don't really care for the director's narration track.. oops.

Question, how can I or is it possible to rip the audio and change the tracks without a complete re-run of the process?

I searched for "switch and audio and track" and "wrong and audio and track" and did not find anything that I could really understand at this time.

Otherwise, I'll rip again.
Thank you.
One step at a time, DT98

P.S. An unrelated question,.. I looked at a site called Daemon Tools that supposedly has a software DVD player/emulator that allows a BIN file to be played as if it was burned to disk. The known issues section said to not use the program if one has or has ever had Adaptec EazyCD creator on their system. I did/do. (came on my system) Are there alternatives to this program and are the results identical/similar to the BIN burned to cd? Mostly curious.

If you still have all the files then this should be kinda easy.

Make a temp directory and copy these files to it.
DVD2SVCD project file.d2s
pulldown_encoded_video.mpv

Start up DVD2SVCD and start like you would regularly.
Select the correct audio track.
Do everything that you normally would.
Hit go and when CCE starts up close everything.
Copy the two files from the temp directory.
Start DVD2SVCD and start up Crash Recovery.
Select Muxing and Cutting and hit continue.
That should be it.

For CD burner software see the DVD2SVCD FAQ. There are several burner software linked. I prefer VCDEasy and/or CDRWIN.

Thank you again Markrb,

I have printed this thread for future reference. And I'm sure I will use the information you posted for changing audio.

Last night I did the complete process again and I'm still encouraged because CCE did not freeze. (VBR 3 pass)

Now I'm off to search about the burned cd playing in fast forward with no audio.. of course there would be no audio in fast forward.

I do not know if the problem is with STHSVCD, it has worked before or if the problem is with the rip or the burning software. I have Nero and Fireburner. I'll look up info on VCDEasy and CDRWIN.

Great, thanks again so much,
DT98

@DT98

following your problem, I did a quick encode of A Knights Tale (region 2 PAL) using ver 1.0.7 build 4 with (CBR for speed).
bitrate set at max=2530 min=300 max avg=2430 audio=224 with no down sample & the rest of variables set at default.

their are no zero timed chapters on the PAL version & the audio was in sync all the way through the copy.

@ Markrb
Mark I dont know if you will know the answer to this but just out of curiosity. do the various region DVDs vary in their make up? other than content(extras) & format(ntsc & pal).

markrb
23rd March 2002, 08:31
I honestly don't know how much they are different. If I had to guess I would say a bit.
There is the different format PAL/NTSC to begin with so they obviously need to encode the video differently so this leaves the rest wide open to change as well.
I have also heard that many times the movie has to be different as well because of licensing issues. Like they are able to only use songs in some regions and not in others, etc...

I have also read that people do not have the out of sync audio nearly as much when they do just one or a few chapters. This has thrown people off in the past.

Thank you for the info Slick and Markrb,

I tried the audio recovery and there is no option in crash recovery for muxing and cutting. I shut down the CCE program when it started.
I probably goofed something.

Anyway, I'll start another full rip and see what happens.

Program is set to Max = 2530, Min = 300, Max avg = 2230, audio = 128 with no down sampling.

I do like this movie and would like to get it done but I have not had a successful rip yet. Something, mostly all sync problems, always wrong.

Here I go again...
Thank you. DT98

Hi Mark

yes, just to concurr & also for DT98s benefit.
I did originaly only do one chapter of A KNIGHTS TALE & that was out of sync by around 1/2 sec or so.
it threw me at first so I did the full encode.
then as I said earlier that was fine. "strange aint it".

Cheers.
