Sorry guys for asking, what's the point in activating the Forced film command when creating a .d2v project ?

The mpeg stream on many DVDs is actually encoded at 23.97 fps. The studio adds RFF/TFF (Repeat First Field / Top Field First) flags that result in the player doing a sort-of telecine on-the-fly to turn the stream into 29.97 fps video that you can watch on an NTSC TV.

Turning on Force Film tells dvd2avi to ignore these flags, thereby giving you access to the intrinsic 23.97 fps stream.

The downside is that there are sometimes portions of the DVD where it actually is encoded at 29.97 fps, and there are no flags to ignore. When dvd2avi runs into one of these sections, I believe it simply decimates (i.e. discards) frames to maintain the 23.97 fps framerate. Since it doesn't pay any attention to what it discards, and makes no attempt to do a real IVTC, this can result in intermittent interlaced frames and/or jerky playback.

Luckily, in most cases these 29.97 fps sections are very short and/or very infrequent, so often you won't even notice them.

Hey folks...I've been using DVD2AVI for a while in frameserving (through VFAPI) to Nandub for DIVx 3 encodes. I've never had a problem with it, but in the latest version I'm a bit stumped at some of the options (DVD2AVI homepage doesn't do much to alleviate my questions). And hey...I've browsed the posts here before asking my Q's... (grin).

There is an 24 fps option in forced film now - I've encoded 2 films (just to see how they turned out) successfully, but I'm not sure if I should continue...what's the dif between 24 fps and 23.973 fps?

Also...I tried the new "Extract DTS" track option on a DTS Vob. DVD2AVI started saving some sort of VOB file, but with 0 bytes...(no go I guess). Can DVD2AVI save a DTS track, and if so, how? I take it that there aren't too many progies out there with that ability (if anyone knows one, please inform - maybe on the audio board).

Anyone help me out here?

I have the same problem...
DVD2AVI saves all the audio tracks but DTS.
Smartripper saves the DTS track, but I can't load it into Maestro... I mean, I can load it but it doesn't play.
I guess Maestro also doesn't like DTS :angry:

Well...I found out what 24 fps does (DUH!). Audio doesn't synch...maybe because I took a 23.973 and put it into 24 fps. Well..don't play around with what you don't understand (#*%!@).

Any more on DTS?

Yes, 24 fps totally destroys sync

As to dts, it's not ready for ripping purposes, ignore it and stuck to ac3....you're really not missing much..if you were that concerened about quality you woudl be using a dvd-r and doign a direct disk copy
