View Full Version : How to get DVD2SVCD to work ?
ts1898

Hi,
I'm new to the DVD2SVCD. One problem I run into is the last step in the process, generating image (.BIN) from .MPG files. VCDImager has trouble with the 2nd .MPG file. The message is "ERROR: image is too big (472533 sectors > 449850 sectors)". Two .MPG files were generated, first one is about 800MB, the second is over 1GB. Why is the 2nd one so large. Please help.
Thanks,
Tom

ts1898,
I hope you get back with that log file. I just had the same thing happen with a 1 pass vbr of u2 live in Boston. Second mpeg file was 1 gig as well.
I deleted the log file and switched to 3 cd CBR which is running now. The video is extremely grainy (artificially?) and this may have driven the vbr nuts but I dont know.
Hope you kept your log.

Hi,
I attached the log below. I'm using a 1.2GHz P3-M system with w2k, and about 10 GB of free HDD space. I thought maybe it was running out the disk space, so I deleted some files and use command line VCDImager to generate a image file from the MPG file but it still failed. I really would like to know why bbMPEG made the 2nd .MPG file 1GB, which is probably the problem, as Nero would complain it doesn't fit on a CD.
Thanks in advance.

hummm... this log is weird:
a)force film was activated, however pulldown was not used;
b)bbmpeg should merge and cut each file so that its maximum file size should be 800MB, however there is a bbmpeg*.mpg file with 1050MB;
c)The CQ value was completely miscalculated. It is hard to find the exact value, but it should not be so far wrong...
well... there are two things that you can do. Make your choice:
1)
a) run bitrate viewer to verify if the *.mpv file, used by bbmpeg, has a framerate equal to 23.97. If yes, run pulldown to "fix" the framerate. Have a look at pulldown folder to verify how to use it;
b) run dvd2svcd and chose "crash recovery -> muxing and spliting";
c) cut the biggest bbmpeg*.mpg into two equal peaces, using tmpeg->mpeg tools;
d) run vcdeasy to make the svcd images with bbmpeg*.mpg files;
2)
a) do the whole encoding again, using CCE.

Pulldown is not run when TMPG is used as the encoder. Instead, the pulldown option is implemented in TMPG. D2S did this to save some time.
Also, the size projection for a tmpg CQ encode is not always accurate. What you can do in this case is increase the "frames per spread" and "spread" numbers. This will yield a more accurate size projection but at the expense of a longer projection cycle.

he he... this info should be, at least, in readme.txt file.
As you can guess, I am not using tmpeg as dvd2svcd encoder. All my tmpeg tests in the past were done with some porno movies, which usually are 29.97 fps (pure NTSC):D

@ddogg off topic
btw: did you see this tmpeg comparison (http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/articles/tmpgenc_test.html)

@mozart, the guy used all the wrong techniques in TMPG. He used Automatic CQ VBR @ 28! I am surprised he even got a picture at all :)
Mozart
21st March 2002, 16:26
he he.. I saw that. However, the CQ value doesn´t matter, because he is doing a comparison between different versions of tmpeg, instead of between tmpeg and another encoder.
The thing that matter is the result: with the same CQ value, an older version of tmpeg has a better quality than version 2.53.
Another impressive result: the encoding done with motion estimation search -> normal is better than the MES -> high quality. This should not be true.
