Probably not but I ask from the point of view of making a dedicated DivX player, as no commercial units seem to be on the horizon (please correct me if I'm wrong).

I loked into this for the same reason, easy playback without full OS/bootup.

There are a lot of limitations, since the author has to add each codec for audio and video into the player by hand/programming, but it does work with most forms of Divx.

My video card (ATI AIW128) wasn't directly supported, so I ended up with average video rescaling onscreen.

the best way would be a mini Win32 Clone thats able to handle
every new codec that comes up for win32

that way the system would require just a cheap dolby 5.1 soundcard
an ~800 mhz cpu and a vga card with tvout preferable everything upgradable in case newer codecs require more cpu power etc...

overall ~ 500 € depending on HDD size ;)

sadly I donīt have a clue about windowsprogramming ;)
oh well hehe

I remember some pmode attempts to code a mini os for a game...

well... maybe some insane guy will do a movie-os one day ;)


p.s.
its probably cheaper to leave a win-notebook in standby ;)

Does it handle TV out i.e. can you send the signal to a TV?

On my ATI AIW 128, I was able to get TV-out of the movie I played, but quickview didn't support HW scaling of the video with the ATI AIW, so there were some very small resizing errors/lines
