Region issues with ripped DVDs

Not sure if this has been discussed previously or not...

I rip movies to a hard drive to view later. I've been using SmartRipper 2.41 and do the backup method to get the entire disc structure. Demacrovision, de-region code, etc are all checked. On a couple of movies recently (Joy Ride and Zoolander for instance) I get an error about the region being wrong trying to view the movie with PowerDVD. It's set to region 1, the movie was region 1, shouldn't be an issue. I'll try it again unchecking the button to remove region coding and see what happens. Just wanted to know if this was a known issue and if there's a fix or not. Thanks in advance...

how about simply changing the region of your software dvd player using dvd genie? that certainly would work

Already did that... DVD Genie is what I used to set PowerDVD to Region 1. I'm wondering if this might be some new form of copy protection (of a sort). I can still view the VOB's as "files" and watch the movie just fine. PowerDVD just pauses between files which is annoying, or I could get Smartripper to make 1 concatenated VOB I guess. I just like ripping in full DVD mode so I can view the extra features as well.

So, DVD Genie -> PowerDVD = Region 1 setting
Ripped a Region 1 DVD with SmartRipper with option checked titled "Region Free - Patch Video_TS"

Viewing with PowerDVD in "DVD on HDD" mode and get a message "This DVD is not viewable in this region" or similar.

I'll try next time without the option for SmartRipper to attempt to region free it and see what happens.

This message comes from RCE code in IFO files. You need Ifoedit to clear this code from all the ifo files. It is the region free button. If you run it on the first only, the movie will start and then throw this message up later, so you must remove it from all IFO. I think Derrow is going to change the code so the program will remove the RCE code from all IFO in one step.

Bingo! Thanks... I used IFOEdit and set the RCE to 1 and they play fine now...

Damn, I just missed this post before I started ripping again. I have this same problem on the movie "The Rock". I ripped it using DVD Decrypter and when I tried to play the ripped files it said it was the wrong region. I didn't realize all of the ifo files could contain the RCE setting.

As suggested, it's easy to fix with IFOEdit. Hope that functionality gets built into SmartRipper. I've had other issues with SR recently I hope get resolved too. It would not fully rip Bandits for me. Tried 2 different discs. Doing a backup where it rips the entire disc it would get to around 60% and stop every time. Oh well...

I think something needs to be added to the FAQ that if you get an error message that looks like the DVD has started to play (for example, if you can see the Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment logo in the background), it's RCE, use IFOEdit.
