View Full Version : Movie Time Problem

I have a problem with the time of the movies i encode. For example, i encoded Jurassic Park 3 (NTSC-R1) in 2 CD. The movie length was 94 min, that is 47 min (approximately) each CD. When i play them (i mainly use RealMagic for TV, but also the same happens with PowerDVD XP on PC), if i use the slider of the program to go to the end of the movie, the time it shows is about half of the normal, that is 26 min, even though i see on TV the 47th minute of the movie.

Of course i wouldn't have any problem with that, except that if i let the movie play without using the slider, when the movie reaches 26th minute it stops as if this was the end.

The same happened when i tried to encode Kiss of the Dragon (PAL-R2) in 2 CD. The CDs seem to have wrong info about the length of the movie.

I use the latest DVD2SVCD (1.0.7 Build 4) and i have tried TMPGEnc 2.53 and CCE 2.50 with the same results.

I have tried compliant or non-compliant SVCD, subtitles or no subtitles, CD images or plain mpg files but nothing solved my problem.

One curious thing i discovered is that if i take the .mp2 part of the movie and play it, then i have the right time. If i take the .mpv part and play it, then i have the wrong time. If i take the multiplexed .mpg and play it (all the above from the HDD), then i have the right time. BUT if i burn it on a CD using Daemon Tools and Nero then the time is wrong.

Lastly, i asked from a friend who happens to be on the SVCD "business" to try. He had the same results. Wrong time.

I have an Athlon XP 1600+ with Windows XP Pro (my friend has Atlon Thunderbird 1.4 GHz with Windows XP Pro).

Below i paste the DVD2SVCD log and .avs script of a chapter (5 min) i tried to encode from Kiss of the Dragon (the files were ripped to HDD with Smartripper, but the same happens if it were ripped directly from the DVD).

Hi StickyS,

don't worry about the wrong time thing in the software players, for me PowerDVD only shows the correct time if I only hit play and then use fast forward or rewind and don't touch the slider bar. If I use the slider I get the wrong time display - it's an known issue.

But I never had any problems with it stopping after having played about 26 minutes of the movie. So that's weird - perhaps you should try to update PowerDVD if not already done and see if this solves this issue or do a re-install of your software DVD players as I don't think it is a problem with the SVCDs DVD2SVCD created - I never had one with it using PowerDVD and all kind of features used (except for subtitles don't work with any software player yet). There is an update to version 4.0.1329b available on their website - perhaps worth a try if you haven't already done.

Greetings,
Gerti

Thank you for replying to my post...

Finally, i came to the conclusion that it isn't the player (Hollywood or PowerDVD) that takes the blame...
Something i do in the process that i cant figured out (yet)...
But i circumvent the problem by doing some extra work in the end of the whole process...
I take every .mpg file that is produced after the cut of the movie (2 .mpg files for 2 CD movie and so on) and i use TMPGEnc to 1) demultiplex the files and 2) then multiplex it again. TMPGEnc rewrites all headers in this process. Then i put the files back again in the Movies directory and i use Crash Recorecy to start from SVCD Authoring. Thus it makes new images, which then play perfectly in both players (time is right even with the use of slider bar)...

@DVD2SVCD: If this mux problem above can be reproed then could you please put an option to mux using TMPGENC? I do not know whether mpeg tools in Tsunami are scriptable...

@StickyS: Although I usually do have time code problems with my standalone player AFAIK that's because Philips players cannot handle them correctly for SVCDs longer than 40 minutes. Shorter SVCDs work fine. You may have a go for a shorter movie/chapter just for test.

Z

I tested chapters as short as 5 minutes...
The time was incorrect...
