Movies wich have only a FEW subtitles

Some movies have only a few (or on some few parts) subtitles on all the movie.

Examples?:

In "Atlantis" when the 'Atlantes' talk.

In "U-571" when the germans talk.

In musicals films during the songs, usually in english (almost in non-english versions... I am from Spain)

Etc., etc...

Usually these few subtitles appears in English, and my son is 7 years old... and Spanish too :), and he can´t understand it.

Of course I do not want to see ALL the movie with subtitles, I want only these FEW parts.

I think other non-english people have the same problem.

There is a way to select the language of these subtitles?

Hi furado,

if I got you right, then you have the following problem:

You want to encode DVD subtitles with your movie that are a native translation of some "hard-encoded" English or so subtiltles?

I had this problem with the "A Knight's Tale" PAL R2 DVD a few days ago. In the beginning there is a little written introduction in English. During these scenes you can see the German subtitles (as a translation) appearing at the top of the screen so they don't cross the English text parts.

These were not "hard-encoded" into the movie and were real DVD subtitles and although I had switched subtitles off on my standalone they appeared. So it seems they were somehow flagged "permanent" because only these subtitles with the translation of the English text appeared and no others during the film.

So I had the problem that I only wanted to rip those subtitles and not all German subtitles because they were together in the same subtitle track with all the other German subtitles.

Here is the way it worked:

I started the conversion process with permanent subtitles and let DVD2SVCD rip all the German subtitles. After all the subtitles were ripped and DVD2SVCD started the Audio extraction I stopped it.

Then I used IrfanView (a good picture viewer) and looked through all the subtitles and only kept the ones from the beginnig that were the translation of the English text parts. So in the end it were only 8 subtitle BMP files I had to keep. Then I edited the "PermSubs.txt" file and only kept the lines corresponding to the BMP files I had kept.

Then I did a "Crash Recovery" from the "Audio Extraction" step and all went just fine. I had a "hard-encoded" translation in the beginning using the permanent subtitle feature of D2S but only for the desired parts of the movie.

The thing is, you have to know which parts or exactly what subtitles you have to keep. So you have to watch the movie before on your standalone and make a mental note or something similar so that you can delete the other subtitles and only keep those you need.

ehh... I would like to see what you are seeing... please, start your encoding and when the subtitles preview pops up, make a "print screen". Save it as .bmp and attach the picture here. Because an attachment is moderated, please, send me a PM so that I can mod your picture.

sorry Mozart, my english is not very good, and I can´t understand you.

When I use DVD2SVCD I never use subtitles, then "subtitles preview pops up" never appears.

I only make my movies simply selecting spanish audio, but in some little movies, like the examples wich I talked about, some subtitles appears though I not select subtitles. The question is how to do that these subtitles appears in spanish, not in english.

If I understand the pleasing reply of Gerti67 (I very acknowledged) he said I can see the movie before, take a note of the parts where these subtitles appears, choose permanent subtitles, and then delete all the subtitles except the few I want. Well, I´m sure that works, but I use DVD2SVCD from 6 months ago and have no problems at all in the "normal" movies, and I finding some more "technical" to learn a bit more.

Really I thinked that al lot of other not-english speaker people haved the same problem, and I expected some like "... then you edit the .ifo file and then ...", or some like that.

hmm - so in the end I'm a bit confused now.

If you can see those English subs after you have done the conversion and having burned the images to SVCDs without having selected one of the subtitle options then those subs are "hard-encoded" into the movie and there's no chance you can replace them with some translations - this is what I get from your last post but please correct me if I'm wrong.

You can only add some subs for them as I described earlier if there indeed are some on the DVD for those scenes. And I think there is no easier way to do that. For example with "A Knight's Tale" it took about 5 minutes to do it this way because I only kept the 8 subs from the beginning so indeed it is no big deal if you know which subs to keep.

come on... once you are trying to select subtitles, you should have, at least, tryed to use subtitles. How could dvd2svcd select a subtitle? magic?

Do you remember VHS's age and its subtitles? Well, most of dumbest american companies are using those kind of subs in English speaking movies, each time that some non-English speaker speaks (Pearl Harbor for example). Some of more smart companies have selectable subtitles in these scenes (Traffic is a good example). Once you said that you have seem different subtitles - Spanish while playing, English while encoding - in a given scene, I was thinking that you were trying to encode a movie like the latter... Sorry, I have overestimated your skills.

I had asked for a key information, based on his report - "I have seem Spanish subs while playing but I have English subs after encoding". He told us that he were not using subtitles while encoding(q) No!

I am sure that the same which I am talking about, a lot of other not-english speaker people haved the same problem. Really only occurs in movies like the examples, but I think that have a solution.
I don´t find help, I start one year ago and I have more than 100 movies done, I only want to understand.

gerti67: exactly is that. But if the subtitles are "hard-encoded" into the movie... why when I see the movie in the original DVD (of course I see the movie with spanish audio and without subtitles) those subtitles appears in spanish?.

Really I thinked that it was an complicated and interesting question, but I am sorrowful now for the problems I caused for a simple question.

What do you mean with "Crash Recovery" Could you tell this in german?????

Hi Soko,

in earlier versions of DVD2SVCD the "Recover" button in "Misc." tab was named "Crash Recovery" - that's the whole secret. ;)

So just hit the "Recover" button after you have stopped the whole conversion process during the audio extraction step, load the "*.d2s" file and continue from the "Audio extraction" step.

Or even easier, just tick the "Edit when dvd2avi is done" option in "Frameserver" tab. So the whole conversion process will stop and a little window will show on your screen waiting for your changes to the Avisynth script. But now, don't do anything but the steps I descibed in my first post (deleting subs and editing the permsubs.txt file). After you have finished these steps just hit "OK" in the Avisynth script window and the process will continue as usual.

So you don't have to abort and recover the conversion process manually.

no problem i understood it, and i worked. And i dont had to stop the prog in the audio extraction. However, only the subtitles that appear when they speak chinese (Movie Rush Hour 2) were ripped!
