DVD2AVI compression question

Which of these 2 methods would I get a better quality avi file or would I get exactly the same result.

1. Rip dvd with smartripper, load vobs into dvd2avi, save file using Divx MPEG-4 codec at 700kb bitrate (to fit on CD), then using virtual-dub with Direct Stream copy

OR

2. Rip dvd with smartripper, load vobs into dvd2avi, save file using Divx MPEG-4 codec at 6000kb bitrate (FULL), then using virtual-dub with FULL PROCESSING MODE and compressing it then to fit on


Basically, is it better to compress in the DVD2AVI step or the Virtual-Dub step

Even better would be to frameserve from DVD2AVI via AVISynth or VFApi to VirtualDub and compress there. Doom9 (http://www.doom9.org) has some nice guides on the subject, why not read some of them ;)

A 2-pass method will provide the "maximum" quality possible for a set file size. Gordian Knot is the calculator of choice for SBC (DivX3), DivX4, DivX5, or Xvid. For DivX4, some use DivX4Log for additional control.

Maybe somebody can tell me, why I should use the Frame-Server option with DVD2AVI (or XMpeg) and send the frames to VirtualDub to compress the Video there.

I always use the DivX5 Pro codec and do only resizing it to my prefered resolution. No filters anyway.
If I want to smooth the video, I use the Pre-Processing of DivX5 Pro on 'light'.

The speed of encoding is while compressing directly in DVD2AVI (or XMpeg) fast enough. Average is 16-17 fps. Normal for my 1GHz machine with the chosen coding options.

So whats is the advantage of using frame serving ?

if you dont want to use any vdub or avisynth filter there is no big advantage. maybe the job control for 2 pass encoding. maybe the filters for resizing or deinterlace are better.
i also dont need any filters and so dvd2avi is the fastest way.
