I have a compaq computer unfortunately... and i wiped out my computer not to long ago and installed a clean version of windows xp pro on it. it reads my dvd rom as a dvd player fine, but i have yet to be able to play DVD's on my computer. I downloaded the "Fraunhofer video and audio codecs" filter thinking it would allow me to play DVD's in Windows Media Player, but i get a message that I dont have a compatiable decorder on my computer. So now I am just gonna ask what I need to do and have someone lead me the correct way before I mess something up. thanks

If I'm not wrong I think you must install a software dvd player, like winddvd or powerdvd for instance in order to play a DVD.

I understand what you are trying to do, playing the dvd within media player. I have owned Windows XP for a while now, got the original of it before it came out in the stores as my fiancee is an employee of a computer store :) Anyway what you are trying to do with playing the dvd in media player will not work right now. No one has released a 3rd party codec that allows playback within media player yet. Until that is released, you have to use an external software player like Windvd or PowerDVD, something like that. From what I understand both of these two companies are making a codec that will allow playback under media player, at least for sure I know the makers of WinDVD are, but until then you will have to install a seperate program.
