Ok.. this is my first rip/encode. I'm following the Doom9 guide to DivX5. I downloaded the GKnot 'package' file along with DivX5 PRO. When using GKnot it says the following:

"If you want AC3 audio, have a look at the AC3 track DVD2AVI has extracted in step 2. Here's an example: gladiator AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3. As you can see the bitrate is part of the filename. In this case the bitrate would be 448 so you would enter this value in the Audio fields (select 448 from the dropdown list)."

448Kbps is exactly what my AC3 stream reads. So I put that in my bitrate calculator. Later on in the guide it talks about audio encoding. Will the AC3 stream still work if I compress it as an MP3? If so, I'm assuming I then put the actual file size in the bitrate calculator..

I just can't seem to figure out if compressing the .ac3 file into an mp3 will still let me hear the AC3 audio when the process is complete.

Thanks!

Transcoding from ac3 to mp3 creates a stereo sound file. To retain Dolby digital sound, do not transcode. Instead, interleave the ac3 file with video using Nandub.

Doom9's guide assumes you want to transcode to mp3 stereo audio.

Holy cow! That would mean that the AC3 file would take up almost 1/2 of the CD!! Wow...

I guess to fit it onto one CD it would be best to forgo AC3 then ehh?

Thanks for the info! (perhaps this should be added to the FAQ?)

I don't use ac3, but most who do use 2 or 3 CD encodings, not 1 CD.

Hi,

In the case of gladiator, ac3 would require two cds.

But I only use ac3 when the sound is 5.1 channel dobly digital.

Some movies have ac3 sound, but only 2channel. I encode to mp3 with those, since it's stereo anyway and saves space.
